Chemical Modeling Engineer, Gigafactory
Sparks (Washoe County) Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering
Job description
Description
The Role:
The Gigafactory Engineering team is looking for a talented and innovative chemical engineer who will help us develop the most advanced, large scale, industrial chemical systems. In this role you will be asked to simulate and analyze chemical systems critical to the operation and growth of the Gigafactory and make design recommendations for optimal performance.
Responsibilities:
· Physics based modeling and analysis of the Gigafactory chemical systems to optimize their design and operation:
· Develop equipment models and integrate into a factory system model to forecast needs, inform infrastructure planning, and identify opportunities.
· Evaluate technology options and make design and safety recommendations to the factory engineering team to improve the performance, sustainability, and cost of chemical systems.
· Chemical systems include solvent recovery and refining, volatile organics abatement, pure and waste water treatment, chemical storage and delivery, and air separation.
· Interface with product design and manufacturing engineers to analyze the requirements of manufacturing processes, and identify opportunities for improved factory integration.
· Work with onsite laboratory and analytical chemists to interpret data generated from analyses of samples drawn from operating systems.
· Analyze factory data to validate design assumptions, improve real world performance of operating systems, and continue to identify additional optimization opportunities.
· Assist with system troubleshooting and field investigations as needed to support onsite teams in order to ensure all chemical systems operate as designed.
Qualifications:
· BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Master’s or PhD preferred and/or evidence of exceptional experience.
· 3+ yrs of relevant experience.
· High energy individual, questions industry standards and state of the art, drives towards optimal designs from 1 st principles.
· Strong technical problem solver and system level thinker capable of identifying highest impact projects and making complex trade-offs.
· Strong engineering fundamentals relevant to the Gigafactory chemical systems:, chemical engineering, process modeling, process scaling-up gas & liquid phase separation, electrochemistry, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics ...
· Strong process engineering skills are required (FMEA, SPC, PAT, HAZOP/LOPA); good techno-economic analysis (TEA) skill is desirable.
· Analytical and quantitative mindset.
· Good at building relationships and working effectively with multiple and diverse teams. Eager to discuss engineering challenges and develop effective solutions to improve the design and operation of the Gigafactory.
· Strong scientific programming skills (Matlab / Simulink, Python, EES or equivalent). Experience with Aspen Plus, LabView, HSC is desirable.
· Exposure to battery design and manufacturing, industrial chemical systems (distillation, dry and wet scrubbers, pure and waste water treatment, chemical storage and delivery system, gas and liquid phase adsorption), and high throughput manufacturing is desirable.
· Familiar with analytical data analysis (e.g. NIR, SEM, EDS, DSC, TGA, GC, TPR, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, XRF, XPS, MS, ICP) is a plus.
