Job description

We offer excellent benefits that help make Tesco a great place to work.

About The Job

Tesco Technology is not your standard IT department. We're an organisation passionate about serving millions of shoppers across the world a little better every day through the use of cutting edge technology.

The retail environment is constantly changing. Much of this revolution is the result of developments in technology. We've always been a leader in this area; from developing supply chain and ordering systems that react to changes in weather, to launching the first online grocery service. But we never stand still, we're always looking for new ways to delight our customers wherever, whenever and however they want to shop with us.

Our team is innovative, highly-skilled, agile, passionate and fun. If you're looking for an environment to create cutting edge solutions which make a difference to millions of customers and colleagues globally, then Tesco Technology is the place for you!

At Tesco Technology, we offer an excellent internship programme that supports you on the first steps of your career. The programme feeds into our two Technology graduate schemes, and allows you to take the time to understand which career path is best suited for you: Product or Programme Management, or Software Engineering.

The experience you will gain over the 10 weeks is designed to grow your expertise in technology while feeding your passion to serve our customers a little better every day. All of this within a great office environment and an organisation that is committed to supporting you to become the very best you can be. The scheme will be based within our newly refurbished campus in Welwyn Garden City; with some opportunities to work in our product & development centre in London.

Main Responsibilities

Your 10 week programme will help you develop your leadership and technical skills. You will build your foundation in retail through a one week induction, which will include an introduction to the Tesco business and the Technology department followed by a short store placement. This will enable you to understand the heart of our business, our customers and how Technology is crucial to fulfilling the customer experience.

Upon returning to the office, you will be given real responsibility and a project to deliver. By working with your colleagues in the UK and in India you will come to understand how technology is developed and run by learning on the go.

The programme is designed to be a challenging one so you will have lots of opportunity to demonstrate your capability and to bring your ideas to Tesco. One example of an intern project was the improvement of the delivery pipeline for one of our systems. This was so that new versions were delivered to testing and live environments automatically and frequently using a continuous delivery pipeline. The intern even built a dashboard to alert the development team if there were issues with the pipeline! We are looking for people who have a desire to improve themselves and the technology we operate. You'll be surprised at how much you are able to achieve in 10 weeks!

Individual and collective improvement is a big focus for us and throughout your programme you will have access to lots of online technical training to improve your ability. There will also be a range of leadership training courses along with support from your buddy, manager and your team. Opportunities for development are available from all directions at Tesco and we want you to understand how to reach your maximum potential. If you have an inquisitive nature, want to know how technology is used/ developed whilst also building upon your own leadership skills then this is the place for you.

We are looking for inquisitive penultimate year students, with a real desire to learn and a passion for technology. Demonstrating this and the ability to deliver technology in the right way throughout your programme could result in you being offered a place on one of our graduate schemes.
