Job Title:
Naval Architect
Job Purpose
To provide naval architecture support to various interfaces such as vessels, projects and operational personnel
Reporting lines and interactions
Hierarchically reports to:
Lead Naval Architect
Operationally reports to:
Lead Naval Architect
Directly supervises:
3 rd party Vendors, graduate engineers, TMOS draughtsmen and placement students
Key interactions (internally, externally):
Internal: Fleet project teams, vessel superintendents, vessel crew, asset managers, operations engineers, various disciplines within Asset Operations such as crane and electrical/PLC, Marine New Build teams, UKBU project teams
External: Classification society/flag state, 3 rd party engineering companies
Job Scope (budget, management, specific criteria):
ยท Stability โ Oversee and maintain the intact and damage stability assessment of all Technip vessels, undertake stability tests โ lightship surveys, draft surveys and inclining experiments, supervise stability computer installations, monitor corrections to the lightship weight of Technip vessels, provide discipline support to Technip vessel crews and verify project loadouts against intact and damage stability criteria
ยท Structural Inspection, Maintenance and Repair โ provide guidance on NDT inspection, weld repair procedure specifications and structural strengthening.Undertake engineering design calcs and prepare structural drawings for the above
ยท Vessel Docking โ Assist in the verification of vessel docking facilities, provide docking plans, undertake dock block/hull structural strength calculations, review docking procedures and check/inspect doc blocks and hull prior to and post docking
ยท FFA and LSA โ Provide discipline support of the maintenance, selection and replacement of fire fighting appliances and life saving appliances onboard Technip vessels
ยท Water Tight โ Provide discipline support of loadline compliance and the safe management of watertight enclosures
ยท Bilge and Ballast Systems โ Provide advice on ballast and bilge; valve, pipe and pump selection, maintenance and replacement
ยท New equipment/Machinery installations โ Review and approve structural design calculations and proposals for permanent and temporary equipment installations.Undertake structural design calculations to class and flag authority requirements in support of vessel upgrades and modifications
ยท Provide technical support throughout Technip on Ship propulsion and resistance, vessel seakeeping, motion response and manoeuvring
ยท To ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with company quality control procedures and the company business management system
ยท Instruction and supervision of Graduate Entry Trainees during their period of training within Asset Operations department
ยท Incident/Failure analysis post structural failures
ยท Steel weight calculations, fabrication estimation, tender preparation/support
ยท Vessel condition surveys including, damage/repair assessment etc
ยท Production of detailed design, class approval and fabrication drawings
ยท Vessel surveys for 3 rd Party vessel suitability including pre-charter survey if required
ยท Guidance on applicable rules, regulations and standards
ยท Normally part of a team and work harmoniously with other team members, whether of same or different disciplines
ยท Occasional (irregular) requirement to travel on business โ to visit Technip and 3 rd party vessels, vendors, fabrication sites, clients and offshore installations
Typical background and experience required:
Must have:
ยท Good degree in naval architecture and/or marine engineering with small craft design, ocean engineering, marine engineering/naval architecture or offshore engineering
ยท > 2 years experience covering the following areas:
ยท Vessel and general structure design
ยท Vessel construction and steelwork fabrication
ยท Stability and hull integrity
ยท Condition surveys
ยท Vessel motions, hydrodynamics and model testing
ยท Classification society and statutory/flag state knowledge
ยท AutoCAD design draughting
Nice to have:
ยท Member, Associate Member or Graduate Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institute of Marine Engineers, Scientists and Technologists (IMarEST) and/or the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME)
ยท Have or be actively working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer Status
Main accountabilities:
ยท Provide Naval Architectural support to on and off-site project teams, vessel operators and vessel crew
ยท Act as marine technical authority on all matters relating to; stability/longitudinal strength, structural inspection, structural repair, vessel docking, fire fighting and life saving appliances, watertight integrity, bilge and ballasting systems, new equipment/machinery installations, lifting operations, ship propulsion and resistance, vessel seakeeping, motion response and manoeuvring.
ยท Provide direct support to the Coatings and Crane/Hydraulic groups within the Asset Technical Department
ยท Ensure appropriate quality of engineering and safety is maintained in all aspects of the support/solution provided to Technip worldwide
