Environmental Engineer

Job purpose

Genesis Environment Skills Group is a dynamic team which includes a range of specialists including engineers, marine biologists, chemists, acousticians, GIS specialists, etc. The Environmental Skills Group currently has a vacancy for a Junior Environmental Engineer to work within the Aberdeen Environmental Engineering team. The successful candidate will support more experienced environmental engineers with the completion of environmental assessments and studies for a variety of projects in the UK and overseas.

Reporting lines and interactions:

Ā·  Hierarchically reports to: Environmental Skills Group Manager
Ā·  Operationally reports to: Environmental Engineering Lead / Project Managers

Key interactions (internally, externally)

The successful candidate will work within the Environmental Skills Group, interfacing with the wider Genesis organisation through interactions with other discipline skills groups and the provision of environmental input for a variety of projects for public and private clients in the UK and overseas.

Typical background, qualifications and experience required

Required Skills:

Ā·  University degree qualified in engineering, chemistry or physics.
Ā·  Experience in a similar role would be beneficial. Graduates will also be considered.
Ā·  Highly numerate.
Ā·  Level of familiarity with environmental engineering techniques and solutions (pollution control and mitigation)
Ā·  Problem-solving and analytical thinking.
Ā·  Excellent written skills, with good attention to detail.
Ā·  Strong team player with excellent time management skills.
Ā·  Well-motivated and able to work to tight deadlines.
Ā·  Ability to think innovatively.
Ā·  Computer literate including in standard MS Office software use

Desirable Skills:

Ā·  Basic understanding of the control and management of industrial emissions and effluent discharge.
Ā·  Knowledge of the energy sector would be advantageous.
Ā·  Awareness of European environmental legislation and the Emissions Trading Scheme.
Ā·  Further relevant experience such as preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments, Best Available Techniques (BAT) Assessments, emission, waste and material inventories, emission and effluent discharge control and monitoring, etc.
Ā·  Desire to develop new skills and experience and interface between the engineering and environmental departments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Ā·  Characterisation and quantification of emissions and discharges for the energy sector.
Ā·  Forecasting energy demand, emissions and discharges for the energy sector.
Ā·  Review of engineering design documentation and drawings in support of environmental studies.
Ā·  Writing of Environmental impact assessments.
Ā·  Input to HAZID/ENVID reviews and multi-discipline engineering projects.
Ā·  Preparation of Best Available Techniques Assessments.
Ā·  Preparation of air dispersion modelling and air quality assessments.
Ā·  Preparation of Environmental Critical Element (ECE) registers.
Ā·  Preparation of new environmental permit applications and / or variations to existing applications (including OPPC, PPC and EU ETS).
Ā·  Identification and interpretation of relevant regulations and standards
Ā·  Provision of environmental engineering technical and compliance advice.
Ā·  Interaction with clients to ensure delivery of requirements to agreed scope, schedule and budget.
