Student Loans Company have a fantastic opportunity for a Trainee Accountant.
This post will offer a 3 year trainee-ship within our SLC Finance Function, supporting the team to deliver first class service for our customers and stakeholders. We will support you to study towards a professional qualification, and ensure you develop a rounded understanding of the Finance profession. We will offer rotation between our varying teams within the Finance Division. This accelerated development will be delivered by allowing you to participate in key experiences while supporting your professional development.
Purpose of the Role:
While studying towards a professional qualification, a rounded understanding of the Finance function will be delivered through placements within each of the areas of the Finance team. As a member of the Finance Team:
Our remit is huge - one that supports around 1.6 million student finance applications a year pays out £7 billion in maintenance loans and grants and £7.5 billion to higher and further education providers and manages a loan book with a value of £74 billion. The growing value of the loan book is a key focus for the organisation, the loan book is becoming a significant national asset.
At the Student Loans Company, our Finance function is key to our success. Our team is responsible for ensuring we secure appropriate funding and get the best possible value for the money we spend, driving forward our continuing mission to enable our customers to invest in their futures by
delivering secure, accurate and efficient assessment, payment and repayment services.
We control expenditure and provide clear and accurate management information, providing value for money from suppliers through contracts and procurement, we also mitigate the Company’s exposure to financial risk.
Accountabilities & Objectives:
- Working across the full Finance team on a rotational basis, learning in each of the different areas and developing a solid all round experience in accounting. Area’s include
- Management Accounting
- Project Accounting
- Financial Analysis (including modelling and financial planning)
- Financial Accounting (including technical and statutory accounting)
- Accounting Systems
- Manage timesheet administration for change and business as usual activities.
- Support processes and governance in rotational area, to deliver and enhance key activities for that team.
- Contribute to the successful month end processes within set timescales.
- Provide the appropriate management information and support to finance and other customers, developing where appropriate.
- Suggest and implement areas for improvements to processes and systems in line with Business need.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Trainee in a relevant discipline.
- Can communicate in a team environment, particularly with non-finance colleagues.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills coupled with attention to detail.
- Reliable and can work under pressure
- Passionate, positive attitude.
- Driven, with the ability to work on your own initiative.
- Strong excel skills
- Prior knowledge of Finance systems would be an advantage but not essential
