Job description

For future 3D sensing applications, including LiDAR, the SWIR range is currently investigated due to its lower sensitivity to background lighting and better eye safety. Nevertheless there are currently no solutions for reducing the cost of integration of the laser source. Moreover, for LiDAR applications wavelength tunability is key, either to implement FMCW modulation or to achieve 2D scanning relying on dispersive gratings antennas. The proposed subject will deal with the design and realization of the wavelength tunable elements using the SOI layer by implementing for example MZI interferometers of Ring resonators . You will participate to the definition of the laser stack and will lead the process integration of the demonstrator.

Objective will be to demonstrate the functionality of the integrated III-V/Si hybrid tunable source on silicon photonics chip  with a sufficient range and speed for FMWC or 2D scanning applications. Cooperation with currently running Ph.D. for the integration of the source together with Silicon Photonics scanning system will be key.

A good knowledge of semiconductor physics, and especially optoelectronic devices is mandatory. 

 The thesis will be on collaboration with CEA-LETI in Grenoble. Candidate will be located on LETI's site (70%) and ST site in Crolles (30%)
