The research and innovation department Polymer & Material Design and Development (PM2D) based in Lyon (FR), contributes to the development of new polymeric solutions in the domain of structural plastics and composite materials. For instance, polymers are reinforced by fillers or fibers to address performance applications, where stiffness and energy dissipation (fatigue, crash) are mandatory. To control the behavior the materials in such applications, a better understanding of the polymer behavior is needed not only in elastic region, but also in anelastic region (at finite strains).

Relations between processes, structure and properties is a major problematic in material science. Recently, a project aiming to characterized deformation mechanisms in high performance semi crystalline polymer has been launched at Laboratory of Polymers and Advanced Materials (LPMA, UMR SOLVAY-CNRS 5268 connected to PM2D), in the framework of a PhD thesis. Crystallization in polymer is a key factor for structural properties of the material.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

The aim of this project is support this PhD. The work will be divided in three parts: - experimental crystallization processes of nucleation and growth establishment by in situ optical microscopy, - thermal treatments of the material to obtain a range of different structures; - relationships between structure and mechanical properties by tensile tests, The student will have access to the experimental infrastructures of Solvay and will work on DSC, microscopy and tensile tests microscopy machines in PM2D, in collaboration with technicians. 

Education and Experience

She/He should have a strong knowledge in material science and continuum mechanics, on experimental aspects. The student will develop his skills on polymer physics in a challenging industrial environment.

Skills

Salary determined by the Agreement for the Chemical Industry (Convention de la Chimie) + compensation in case of double accommodation.
