Job Overview and Responsibilities

The Mechanical Research Analyst is responsible for providing testing and data collecting activities to the
Solvay Specialty Polymers R&D Department. Applicant will be expected to perform a variety of routine and
complex analytical procedures in the analysis of polymers, composite materials, and raw materials by various
testing techniques, including but not limited to: tensile, flex, impact, compression, fatigue, hardness,
flammability, HDT, specific gravity, and mold shrinkage properties. A research analyst will be responsible for
supporting best practices in physical mechanical laboratory, maintaining analytical equipment, and working as
member of a quality control team.
Position Accountabilities
? Safely perform a variety of routine and complex physical mechanical tests including but not limited to tensile,
compression, flex, impact, fatigue, hardness, flammability, HDT, specific gravity, and mold shrinkage properties.
Produce reliable and precise data to support R&D and QC customers.
? Perform test and record test results. Report data into LIMS system. Communicate with internal customers.
? Understand quality system requirements, such as ISO 17025. Strictly follow ASTM and ISO standards for
physical mechanical testing and reporting. Maintain SPC charts.
? Prepare samples for testing as required by test methods. Perform work with accuracy and in accordance with
established procedures.
? Keep lab equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing
preventive maintenance and maintaining log books.
? Perform all work activities in a safe and timely manner. Proactively identify safety related items that need to be
corrected or improved and initiates appropriate actions. Participates in safety audits and safety meetings; closes open
audit action items in a timely manner.
? Follow both written and verbal instructions. Provide full, complete, and accurate documentation of all work as
required by LTMs, SOPs and company policies and procedures.
? Provide technical support to Quality, Operations, Marketing and Sales. Support testing labs at other Solvay’s facilities.
? Perform 5S and housekeeping duties as required. Routinely maintains and cleans laboratory facilities and
equipment.
? Maximize technical activities to improve efficiencies and minimize backlog / workload.
? Complete routine work without supervision. Complete complex work under limited supervision.
? Participate in lab alignment initiatives as well as proficiency testing to demonstrate testing competencies.
? Overtime (over 40 hrs./work week) may be required.
? Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education
? BS degree in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry or a related life science.
Minimum Experience
? 3-5+ years of experience in material testing laboratory environment is a plus

Skills

Mechanical aptitude and ability to assemble, operate and troubleshoot variety of test equipment and basic
industrial power tools (saws, drill press, etc).
? Passion for safe practices in working in a mechanical laboratory.
? Must be self-motivated, organized, detail oriented, and capable of routinely working in a high throughput
testing laboratory environment.
? Work effectively with others, demonstrate a positive teamwork approach, and regularly interface with
internal customers.
? Ability to handle multiple priorities and plan work for maximum effectiveness to complete assignments
within a given or specific time frame.
? Utilize technical knowledge and problem solve on a daily basis
? Advanced computer skills to navigate instruments computer systems, LIMS, written and verbal
communication skills.
? Have the ability to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds, use hands and arms, perform manual labor tasks
required for daily lab operations, perform physical tasks including walking, sitting, standing for extended
hours, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling, carrying and transporting objects.
? Some travel and/or overtime may required
