The Ceramic Product Engineer is responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of manufactured products for a given number of assigned product lines.  This should be achieved through 1) defect prevention, 2) defect detection and subsequent problem solving and 3) leadership of projects, aimed at improving quality and/or reducing product cost of goods sold.  The Ceramic Product Engineers will enable improvements through improved process controls, as well as process and product development.  Ceramic Product Engineers must statistically design, implement, and analyze experiments with goals to reduce process variability, process rejects, and improve product quality.  The Ceramic Product Engineer will also develop methods/procedures to improve existing or new processes.  Ceramic Product Engineers must maintain and practice the ability to manipulate batch composition and generate and implement ideas to improve plant yield, improve efficiencies, reduce costs and reduce daily routine workload.

The Ceramic Product Engineer role requires collaborative work and the ability to work with others. The Engineer is self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision. Successful candidates possess a skill set that enables and drives continuous improvement. This critical position is expected to drive quality within the organization with emphasis on doing it right the first time.

This position focuses on the overall quality management of products throughout the production process and includes active work in the areas of product verification and validation to detect defects as part of the site’s World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Quality and Process Control Pillar.  This position is the subject matter expert for assigned products and processes. 



Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Operations, or comparable technical field
Good understanding of mathematics, statistics, and material properties.   
Advanced degree in Ceramic, Material Science, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, preferred
3-5 years of work experience in a manufacturing environment    
Strong understanding of quality control systems, as well as structured problem solving knowledge & understanding

Practical/Technical Knowledge:

Demonstrated understanding of Six Sigma & Lean Manufacturing concepts is preferred
Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements and relevant industry standard practices is required
Experience participating in audits and implementing quality management systems is required
Practical understanding & usage of FMEA, SPC, and GD&T theories & applications is preferred
Demonstrated expertise in instrumental analysis, analytical interpretation, methodology and statistical analysis is required
Computer proficiency, including a strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required
Strong project management skills with emphasis on the design & development phases on product life-cycle is preferred
Experience in change management and continuous improvement projects i preferred








·       Create and maintain batch sheets in a timely manner for assigned product lines.

·       Identify important process parameters and develop control variables and test procedures for assigned processes and products.  Conduct daily process parameter checks.

·       Compile and provide analysis of data used to monitor product yield and defects, and report to senior management as necessary.

·       Using appropriate WCM tools, lead structured problem solving efforts as they relate to quality defects through the manufacturing processes and communicate outcomes to appropriate production managers.

·       Qualification of all raw materials to improve quality, increase supply alternatives, and reduce cost.

·       Monitor raw material and final product properties and maintain strict compliance to specifications, responding to SPC out of spec forms promptly.

·       Meet and exceed plant defect/reject budget for all assigned products.

·       Provide governance and direction to technicians.

·       Lead project teams focused on improving product quality through reduced process and product variation. 

·       Lead project teams focused on reducing the overall cost of goods sold associated with assigned products.

World Class Manufacturing and Quality Systems

·  Quality system subject matter expert, responsible for compliance and certification to ISO9001 standards.
·  Collaborate with plant leadership and peers in the development and deployment of the Quality Control System, including, but not limited to, definition of defects, basic product characteristics, process parameters, critical to quality points, quality at the source, detection failures, and defect analysis system.
·  Audit and measure supplier performance and conformance on a monthly basis. Support purchasing activity to qualify new vendors and assign corrective actions to suppliers for quality deviations and non-conformances.

·     Partner with leaders to continuously improve environmental, health, and safety awareness and accountability systems by leading and participating in environmental, health, and safety inspections, self-assessments, and audits.

·     Promote, develop and mentor safety initiatives to drive an autonomous environmental, health, and safety culture and demonstrate commitment through SMAT / EMAT assessments.
