What's the Job?

The Glass Furnace Engineer will provide technical expertise in the area of furnace design and operation to assist the Insulation Group in the development and implementation of capital and major maintenance projects in the $50k (furnace repairs) – $10 million (furnace rebuilds) range. There are six glass melting furnaces in North America that are the responsibility of this person.

Projects will include, but are not limited to, furnace repairs to extend furnace life, furnace rebuilds, and furnace operation to improve energy usage and emissions. This position has responsibility for long-term project budgeting and scheduling as it relates to furnace rebuilds and repairs, equipment selection, and project administration related to scope, cost and schedules. This is accomplished through management of a project team consisting of co-workers, plant representatives, consultants, and contractors.

This individual must take the appropriate steps to ensure that the project’s performance objectives are achieved and the projects are completed on time and within budget. This individual is responsible for the technical evaluation of all furnace projects for the group. In addition, this individual must work closely with the Furnace Principle Engineer, plant Hot End Managers and Engineers, the Saint-Gobain Furnace Group in France, and the Finance Group to review project costs and benefits.

Other responsibilities include: (1) Providing the plants with assistance concerning the furnace and batch house operations and (2 Creating and maintaining technical liaisons within the Saint-Gobain family. This position reports to the Director of Engineering for the Insulation Group.

Position will require 50% travel to production facilities. Extended travel will be required during furnace rebuilds. International travel may also be required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

What do you bring?

·  Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Ceramic, Structural, Civil or Mechanical) and minimum of 10 years for furnace design, rebuild, repair, operation experience.
·  Basic knowledge of the glass manufacturing process and familiarity with gas/oxy and electric furnaces as well as Batch Plant operations.
·  Strong organizational skills are required to meet multiple task targets
·  This job will require strong interpersonal skills to work with the plant personnel and outside vendors and contractors.
·  This individual should have leadership skills to manage contractors, control budgets, and maintain schedule commitments.
·  Candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience with writing specifications and scopes of work.
·  Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project and PowerPoint) and have strong computer literacy. 
·  Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor or SolidWorks software is a plus.

Ability to travel 50% to meet position requirements.
