Trainee Patent Attorney - Biomedical

The position

We are seeking a Patent Attorney Trainee with a biomedical background. As a member of the Pharma patent department you will advise our scientists on the patenting of inventions in the field of bioinformatics/computational biology, computer-implemented, medical devices and bioengineering inventions. On your path to develop as a European Patent Attorney, you will learn to secure patent protection, freedom to operate and market exclusivity during the life cycle of Roche products in close collaboration with the members of all functions involved.

In addition, your main responsibilities are:

  • Pro-active harvesting and handling of invention reports and drafting of patent applications in close collaboration with Research & Development

  • Handling of patent aspects for biology, computer and device related projects and products, including prosecution, defense and enforcement of patent rights

  • Managing a patent portfolio, supporting the decision making process for worldwide filings, including maintenance and abandonment of patent filings

  • Performing freedom to operate assessments

  • Reviewing of planned publications

  • Evaluate contract terms related to IP and coordinate with the Legal and Licensing departments on the drafting and negotiating of same

  • Prepare for the European Qualification Examination under supervision and mentoring of an experienced patent attorney


 

Who you are

You have a background in bioinformatics, bioengineering, or related fields, preferably with a PhD, and a strong and broadly based interest in computer software, machine learning, artificial intelligence as well as in adjacent areas such as devices. You have a strong interest in patent law and interdisciplinary matters with a will to broaden your horizon while working in a multinational Pharma environment. 

In addition, you bring:

  • Structured, reliable and precise style of work with well-developed analytical and writing skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Fluency in English is a must, knowledge of additional languages, in particular German will be an advantage

  • Finely honed interpersonal skills, collaborative, curious, self-aware team player and intrinsically motivated,

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, to handle several projects simultaneously and prioritize them all in a proactive manner,

  • Strong business acumen, thinking out of the box, decisive

This is a 1-year temporary position, located in Basel, Switzerland, that can be extended to continue the preparation for the European Qualification Examination as mentioned above.
