Roche Sequencing Solutions (Santa Clara) is a group at Roche developing nanopore based sequencing dedicated to making clinical genetic testing easy and affordable. We are developing a revolutionary, low cost, single-molecule DNA sequencer that can potentially improve the lives of people in a wide variety of ways including timely screening for diseases and diagnosis of various cancers.

Roche is looking for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is passionate about revolutionary sequencing technology. The System Engineer will become an expert on the operation, theory, and data analysis from the new Roche Nanopore Sequencing platform. Following Roche product development processes, they will help take the instrument, consumable device (CD) and software from an advanced proof of concept to an operational laboratory instrument. Drawing on experience in systems, biochemistry and/or materials science, the System Engineer will design and implement experiments on the Roche sequencer and will help monitor, improve, and analyze microfluidic consumable devices, instrument interfaces, and processes. The candidate will analyze and present experimental results around quality, variability, and robustness of the consumable devices and the system and work collaboratively across CD, instrument, reagents, and system teams. The candidate must be self-motivated, details-oriented, and able to work well in a team.

Responsibilities:

· 
Accurately and consistently record experimental method, materials, and results for daily consumable device QC tasks

· 
Become an expert on the operation of the Roche High Throughput Sequencing Platform

· 
Design, implement, and analyze sequencing results of various consumable device process changes and various operating parameters

· 
Contribute to the creation of instrument operating protocols for consumable device functional testing

· 
Investigate, troubleshoot, conduct failure analysis, and perform consumable device development in a fast-paced environment

· 
Debug instrumentation, consumable device, and software issues to create a robust platform

· 
Understand and apply statistical methods, design of experiments, and/or process control monitoring techniques

· 
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Minimum Requirements

· 
0-5 years applicable industry experience. Preferably more than two years experience.

· 
B.S. in bioengineering, computer science, electrical or mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, statistics, or a related discipline with a background in molecular biology or biochemistry

· 
B.S. in a biochemistry, chemistry, or materials discipline with a background in instrumentation

· 
Meticulous attention to detail and excellent written and electronic record keeping skills

· 
Proficiency in writing technical reports and verbally communicating with other technical staff

· 
Excellent troubleshooting (experimental, hardware, software, reagents) and problem solving skills, along with experimental design experience

· 
Strong oral and written communication skills

· 
Self-motivated and able to work well in a team

· 
Prefer experience with statistical data analysis using JMP, Python or R

· 
Prefer Python programming experience

· 
Prefer understanding of or experience with DNA manipulation techniques, sequencing methodologies, or other wet laboratory instrumentation
