Roche Sequencing Solutions (Santa Clara) is a nanopore based sequencing group dedicated to making clinical genetic testing easy and affordable. We are developing a revolutionary, low cost single-molecule DNA sequencer that can potentially improve the lives of people in a wide variety of ways including timely screening for diseases and diagnosis of various cancers. By fusing biological and integrated circuit technology. Developing this unique platform requires expertise across a range of fields: Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Theory, Biophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Protein Engineering, Digital and Analog Circuit Design, and Electrochemistry.

We are seeking a talented scientist, highly collaborative individual who is passionate about revolutionary sequencing technology. The candidate will perform synthesis, purification, and analysis of sequencing molecules and precursors for new sequencing platform and will help with the progress from advanced proof of principle to an operational laboratory instrument. Drawing on experience in organic synthesis, automated DNA synthesis, automated peptide synthesis and purification methodology, the candidate will help develop novel sequencing molecules to improve system performance.

This is a hands-on position whose primary responsibilities include organic and automated synthesis approaches as well as purification and analytical QC and release of sequencing molecules. You will help generate novel materials and synthetic schemes and use analytical skills to answer various system questions. You will help create new operating modes and sample assays to make economical sequencing a reality. The candidate must be self-motivated and able to work well in a team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· 
After introduction to work processes, begins to organize, conduct and perform synthesis and purification utilizing established and published procedures, and technical and theoretical understanding.

· 
Assumes responsibility for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of experimental results.

· 
Summarizes synthesis plans, and reviews conclusions with supervisor/project leader. Communicates results of experiments.

· 
Keeps supervisor/project leader informed of project status, particularly of significant findings and results in critical problem areas.

· 
Performs work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA).

· 
Operates automated DNA synthesis and automated peptide synthesis equipment for material preparation.

· 
Performs necessary purification and analytical chemistry and quality control of important molecules.

· 
Assumes accountability for electronic lab notebook documentation, ensuring experimental methods and results are recorded timely, accurately and consistently, and according to established formats.

· 
Participates in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.

· 
May troubleshoot issues related to lab instrumentation.

· 
Works independently and manages own work flow to accomplish assigned objectives.

· 
With guidance, analyzes and brainstorms alternative approaches to solve problems and finds solutions.

· 
Makes sound recommendations to solve problems.

· 
Uses discretion and independent judgment to recommend solutions to basic problems that their individual or team projects.

· 
Coordinates with other lab members to ensure supplies of needed sequencing materials.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

· 
Masters Degree in Chemistry with at least 2 years related work experience or Ph. D. in Chemistry

· 
Experience in preparation of monomers for automated DNA synthesis and performing automated DNA synthesis desirable

· 
Experience in preparation of monomers for automated peptide synthesis and performing automated peptide synthesis desirable

· 
Experience with various chromatography methods (normal phase purification, reverse phase purification, ion exchange purification, HPLC, etc.)

· 
Strong communication and technical presentation skills

· 
Excellent laboratory technique

· 
Experience in analytical chemistry of biomolecules (e.g. DNA oligonucleotides or oligopeptides)

· 
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment

· 
Strong track record of time management between projects
