Role Summary

The Scientist II will be part of PCR IVD Research & Early Development team in Pleasanton within the Roche Molecular Systems. The desired candidate will be responsible for the research and early development of real-time PCR assays for infectious disease and genomics diagnostics. She/he will also contribute to the assessment of external technology relevant to infectious disease, oncology and genomics diagnostics strategy.

Responsibilities

·  Works under general supervision, to conduct and monitor laboratory experiments utilizing established and published procedures, and technical and theoretical understanding. Makes recommendations to resolve problems encountered during experimental procedures. Assumes responsibility for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of experimental results. Summarizes experimental results, and reviews conclusions with supervisor/project leader. Communicates results of experiments in the form of reports and presentations. Keeps supervisor/project leader informed of project status, particularly of significant findings and results in critical problem areas. Performs work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA).
·  Analyzes experimental data using various data analysis software and/or applying quantitative methods. Forms conclusions, and provides/documents process improvements. Uses technical writing skills to produce reports and documents. May present findings at internal meeting.
·  Assumes accountability for own electronic notebook documentation, ensuring experimental methods and results are recorded timely, accurately and consistently, and according to established formats.
·  Participates in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.
·  May troubleshoot issues related to instrumentation.
·  Receives general instructions; plans and executes own work.
·  Keeps informed of trends and developments in area of scientific responsibility.
·  May establish and work with individuals or teams outside of immediate functional area or RMD.
·  Knows and effectively uses the broad concepts of a particular filed or specialization to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity.
·  Analyzes alternative approaches to solve problems or develop new perspectives on existing solutions. May act as a lead for assigned projects or team.
·  Other duties as assigned by management.
·  Designs, optimizes, and provides technical expertise related to multiplexed PCR assays.
·  This position will require handling of infectious materials and extracting nucleic acids from clinical samples including tissue, plasma and blood.

Qualifications

·  B.S. degree Biological/Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
·  Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experience required.
·  Ability to design and execute relevant laboratory experimentation and determine next steps within the context of overall project goals and direction.
·  Experience in primer design and evaluation of multiplex qPCR and digital PCR assays using Sybr and Taqman-based detection.
·  Familiarity with sequence analysis tools, and NCBI programs such as BLAST.
·  Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing methods.
·  Familiarity with JMP, MS Office, PowerPoint, and ability to learn new technical software rapidly.
·  Must be organized, work accurately, and be comfortable in a fast-paced project.
·  Ability to act independently.
·  Assay development experience is highly preferred. Familiar with quality assurance systems and in vitro diagnostic regulations such as CE-IVD, CLIA, and FDA US-IVD is a plus.
·  Team oriented with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to take ownership and accountability of assignment.
·  Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams.
