Job description

The Market Intelligence Team within Microsoft Advertising is responsible for generating competitive, and market insights to shape a world class ad monetization engine for Microsoft and our partner publishers.   We work with all groups driving monetization improvements including engineering, customer-service operations, advertising sales, marketing, and product management to enable rigorous, effective, and data-driven decision making.  

If you are a bright and critical thinker who is eager to transform the digital advertising industry, excels at framing complex problems, and have a proven track record of developing and landing clear, defensible recommendations, then this is the place for you.   We are looking for an extremely talented, highly motivated and productive individual with expertise in the areas of statistics, modeling, and Data Mining.   The team brings together customer research, strategy, and data analytics to enable rigorous, and effective decision making.   The team works closely with partners across internal groups to identify business opportunities and solutions for search advertising.   Our work is hypothesis-based, data-driven, customer-centric and actionable.   The work we do results in tangible impact to Microsoft’s bottom-line – and to that of our clients.  

This role will be responsible for providing deep level data analytics and modeling for Bing Ads.

Key responsibilities include:

• Perform complex analysis on very large data sets using appropriate data analysis techniques and tools

• Apply statistical and data mining techniques to understand advertiser and consumer behavior, marketplace dynamics, and opportunities for the Bing Ads business.

• Generate actionable insights to improve the Bing Ads search advertising platform, increasing both long-term revenue and relevance.

• Work with Engineering to develop automated benchmarking dashboard solutions (e.g. customer demand health, marketplace performance measurement, data validation, etc.).

• Develop analytical methodologies to generate high quality sales leads to sales teams to support customer acquisition

• Support statistical analysis of surveys administered by the team for quantitative customer research.

• Present findings and recommendations to key decision makers at various management levels

Desired profile

Qualifications:

• Ability to apply your expertise and logical problem-solving abilities in solving real-world problems.

• High competency in working with databases with a good understanding of efficient data structures and algorithms

• Hands-on approach to data analysis / data mining with a strong focus on quality.   Experience with turning large scale data into actionable insights and decisions.

• Deep understanding of several of the following: time series analysis, regression analysis, clustering, decision trees, neural networks

• Superior communications skills, both verbal and written - especially as it pertains to communicating complicated technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.  

• Strong desire and ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment

• Ability to deal with ambiguity, taking high level requirements and independently getting to required level of granularity

• A bachelor’s degree in Statistics, economics, computer science, or a related field required.   Masters or PhD preferred

• 3+ years of experience analyzing big data, modeling, information retrieval (professional or academic); experience with online-advertising and/or e-commerce data strongly preferred.

Technical Requirements:

• Expertise with Office Productivity Tools required (Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, etc.)

• Basic programming skills and experience required (e.g. SQL or equivalent)

• Expertise with data analysis and statistical tools a plus (e.g. R)

• Web Programming knowledge a plus (e.g. HTML, JavaScript)
