We are looking to grow and branch out into new and exciting products, plus we believe that at the heart of an exciting future for our produce business is having experts in produce and agronomy who can work with our partners and growers to develop the future in new and exciting ways. Using your technical knowledge, expertise and judgement you’ll ensure the consistent delivery of innovative, high quality, safe and legal products, which meet our M&S brand values, ensuring the produce category meets its sales, and profit targets. You’ll identify and deliver (manage the delivery) of strategic technical initiatives and take accountability for key technical workstreams. Using your knowledge and skills you’ll deliver innovative technical solutions to continue to drive sales and customer satisfaction. In addition, you’ll use your knowledge to aid colleagues in the technical team to widen their knowledge and deliver category business unit objectives.

Key accountabilities and measures

Category & Supply Base

·  Working with suppliers to ensure products made safely to agreed standards
·  With category team development of innovative products and setting of quality standards
·  Sourcing & developing suppliers to deliver the strategic needs of the Business Unit
·  With commercial team using skills to source raw materials that meet the buying strategy

NPD & Innovation

·  Create and deliver research and innovation plans
·  Input to/Determine technical vision and input into the Business Unit strategy for product area

Quality

·  Ensure product quality is continually monitored and maintained

Governance

·  Utilise knowledge of Food Law to ensure product and packaging is legal
·  Ensure Marks & Spencer’s Quality Management System implemented both internally and at suppliers
·  Ensure suppliers are audited as appropriate ensuring non- compliances are remedied
·  Management of an appropriate independent product testing programme
·  Management & reduction of Customer complaints

Technology

·  Provide up to date technical advice across the BU for specific products and other areas of technical responsibility
·  Representation of the Business Unit and the company externally on industry issues
·  Work with cross discipline groups on initiatives that require technical input
·  Exploit new systems and processes to build a better business
·  Ensure ongoing technical benchmarking of industry sector to provide input for selecting a supply base

People

·  Maintain professional status & accreditation of IFST (or similar body) through appropriate CPD
·  Where appropriate provide line management for the technical team, including; setting the framework for continual up-skilling and development of the technical team, involving the team in decision making and having a direct and positive working relationship with team (Technical and Category)

Key skills

·  Degree level technical qualification in an appropriate subject
·  Where appropriate to hold an externally recognised professional competence ( e.g. FIFST, MIFST )
·  Related / Industry experience of specific industries within the Food Sector
