The role at a glance

Join our award winning in-house legal team at M&S and you'll find a range of work that is diverse, high-profile, interesting and challenging. As the lead IT/Tech lawyer you will support and advise the IT, Digital and M&S.com teams on all strategic and complex transactions, projects and outsourcing whilst business partnering with the senior teams in those areas. You will work closely with the Head of Commercial Legal to deliver the M&S Legal strategy in support of the key business initiates and the ongoing transformation of M&S. In addition to this you will also support the Head of Commercial Legal with the supervision of the team in their work across all key business areas, including Clothing and Home, Food, Strategy, International, Supply Chain and Logistics, Marketing, Facilities Management, IT, M&S.com, Finance, Treasury and HR.

What the role will involve

• Lead on IT/Tech transactions and outsourcing and related advice

• Advise on the legal implications, constraints and options involved in all aspects of the business relating to its commercial suppliers and new selling channels (ecommerce/multichannel) from both a contractual and customer facing perspective and related matters

• Support the Head of Commercial Legal and Head of Legal on strategic projects and relationships

• Business partner with IT/Tech, Digital and Ecommerce teams and senior leaders

• Prepare and negotiate commercial contracts on behalf of the business

• Formulate policy/strategy/structures on dealings with third parties

• Formulate and draft policy/strategy on related specialist areas working with commercial, strategy and legal colleagues as and when necessary

• Make judgements on the viability of litigation and advising on the legal and policy implications of reaching commercial settlements

• Prepare and deliver training and presentations to enable commercial colleagues to make informed decisions

• Challenge current processes and practices to safeguard and enhance M&S’ reputation

• Work in partnership with client areas to build a relationship of trust and confidence, to understand business and customer needs

• Supervise members of the team and role model M&S business behaviours

We would love to meet someone with the following skills and experience

• Qualified solicitor in England and Wales

• Particular knowledge and expertise in commercial law and IT/Tech transactions and projects is essential

• Experience in leading or supporting on large outsourcing projects is desirable

• Ability to forge and develop strong relationships across the business

• Confidence in presenting to and/or advising Director-level stakeholders (preferably at C-suite level)

• Excellent communicating and influencing skills

• Strong sense of commerciality and a truly business partnering mindset

• An enthusiastic and engaging approach to their work with the ability to inspire others

• Some previous in-house experience (including secondments) is desirable but not essential. This role is considered to be an excellent opportunity for someone wanting to gain or build upon in-house experience in a well-respected and high achieving in-house legal team with a high degree of responsibility and autonomy
