Object Oriented Programmer - Python or Android or Java or RubyOnRails

  • Internship
  • London (Greater London)

Job description

Do you want some real world experience that improves your confidence as a programmer? Are you familiar with Object Oriented Programming? Would you like the option to work from home or have flexible work hours on the days (and nights!) that suit your individual coding style? And finally, do you want the code you write to make a positive difference in the world? If your answer is yes, you could be right for our Object Oriented Programming Internship.

At Makerble we help charities quantify and accelerate their impact. Many charities working overseas use paper-based methods to capture evidence of their impact. That's why we created a mobile app that works offline and lets charities collect evidence of their impact while they're in the field. Here's a 60 second video outlining how our mobile app works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijs-dS99QAE

Makerble.com is built in Ruby on Rails. Even if you haven't programmed in Ruby on Rails before, we are confident that you will be able to learn the language. We have had two interns this summer who switched from Python to Ruby on Rails within two weeks.

Our mobile app is built on Android.

What your responsibilities will be:

- Building new functionality
- Fixing bugs which arise
- Brainstorming new functionality that we could add
- Collaborating with designers to ensure that the best product is built
- Occasionally looking at user analytics to understand how the app or web product could be improved
- For Android developers only: Linking the mobile app with our API
- For Ruby On Rails Developers only: making changes to our API

** WATCH OUR PREVIOUS INTERNS **

Meet one of our summer interns - this is Kieren who's studying Design at Leicester and was one of our designers being interviewed by one of our Android developers this summer, Senna studying Computer Science at Kings College London. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSpHM4yRaT8

Now watch one of Makerble's founders, Matt, interviewing Senna about his time as a developer at Makerble building our Impact Tracker mobile app for Google Play Store. This interview took place in one of the founder's houses because it was such a busy day that day!

Finally, meet Pierre. A developer from France who came to London this summer for an internship at a startup. He used to programme in Python but found it easy to switch to Ruby on Rails which is the language that Makerble's website is built in. It only took Pierre two weeks to make the switch to Ruby on Rails and he did a fantastic job moving our web product forward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdF9wilqhkE
