Its vision is to be the legal adviser of choice for KPMG’s clients when it comes to their people, corporate structures, internal arrangements, regulatory requirements and disputes with HMRC. Core corporate, commercial and employment law teams, and a market leading tax litigation team, are already in place. Over the next few years, these teams will grow and Legal Services will expand into other areas of law that fit within its vision and the needs of KPMG’s clients.

The KPMG Legal Services Team sits within the tax department in our office in Canary Wharf, London. Its establishment flows naturally from KPMG’s long history of successfully delivering multidisciplinary services to its clients. Its vision is to be the legal adviser of choice for KPMG’s clients when it comes to their people, corporate structures, internal arrangements, regulatory requirements and disputes with HMRC. KPMG is regulated by the SRA as a multi-disciplinary practice.

The Legal Services immigration team currently comprises 20 solicitors and non-solicitors with experience from across the sector including work for the Home Office, corporate immigration services and human rights and appeals.

We are now looking for a trainee to support the immigration team. The role is based in Canary Wharf and is very varied, you will be required to manage your time well and be able to balance several pieces of work simultaneously, prioritising appropriately to ensure tight deadlines are met.

Role and Responsibilities

- UK Inbound Immigration – Working with a variety of external clients to secure UK immigration permissions for their employees and families, as well as working with internal stakeholders on UK immigration permissions required for KPMG employees.
- Global Immigration Management – Working with a variety of external clients to secure the relevant immigration permission of the relevant country for their employees and families, including co-ordination of other KPMG offices and third party providers around the world.
- Private Client Immigration – Providing bespoke immigration advice to High Net Worth Individuals and their families.
- Immigration Audits – auditing the compliance of corporate and educational institutions through onsite review and reporting.
- Knowledge Management: Keeping up to date with changes to the global immigration landscape and maintaining internal systems up to date in real time. Actively seeking opportunities to share knowledge and best practice and participating in team and firm events, giving internal and external presentations and producing articles for publication.

Qualification and Experience Required

The successful applicant must:

- Have a Legal Practice Certificate as a minimum criteria;
- Have at least 12 months previous experience in immigration matters dealing with corporate clients and individuals at an immigration practice with SRA/OISC accreditation;
- Have the ability to get up to speed quickly on technical matters and be keen to continue developing his/her legal skills and engage in new areas of work.;
- Have experience of handling day-to-day immigration queries such as assessing eligibility to work, eligibility to obtain Tier 1, 2 or 5 immigration permissions and assisting with Home Office audits;
- Have excellent skills in drafting supporting documents, policies and procedures;
- Be able to demonstrate an ability to build relationships across KPMG or with clients;
- Have experience of advising alongside other professionals such as tax or employment advisers;

- Ideally, the successful applicant will have advised on the immigration law aspects of:
o Hiring non-European nationals in the UK
o EEA applications such as permanent residence
o Intra group transfers of employees including international assignments
o UK employers compliance with sponsorship obligations
o Foreign company set up in the UK
o Prevention of illegal working
