ADVERTISED SALARY: £15,600

Postgraduate Research Student – Powertrain Fuel Systems

Salary: £15,600
An ever-evolving heritage. A truly exciting future. Two of the world’s most iconic brands. Jaguar Land Rover is revered across the globe. Continually pushing the boundaries of innovation and redefining the benchmark for excellence, we set the standards others want to follow. We want to keep it that way too. Which is where you join the journey.

The Team:

Powertrain Research and Technology are responsible for delivering robust, innovative and cost-effective new technology into the Jaguar Land Rover products. The Systems team are responsible for developing advanced powertrain technologies relating to exhaust, fuel, air-intake and urea systems. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and self-motivated postgraduate student to support powertrain systems research projects.

You’ll be given a choice of one of our two projects.

Project 1: Optimised PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) fuel tank for future saloon vehicle architecture

The main objective of this project is to develop a fuel tank concept for PHEV vehicles based on a future architecture. To this end, you’ll perform literature review of current PHEV fuel tank technologies, which will help you develop key vehicle requirements for a PHEV tank in this vehicle architecture. You’ll then compare the various PHEV tank technologies against vehicle requirements, identifying in turn an optimum solution based on multiple input requirements.

Within this project, you’ll work with Jaguar Land Rover’s Design team to create a 3D model of the PHEV fuel tank concept, and you’ll further engage with the team as well as CAE teams to conduct initial functional analysis (relating to performance, NVH and modal durability) of the PHEV tank concept. There may also be an opportunity to conduct physical validation of prototype parts (TBC).

Project 2: Concept design of large capacity plastic PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) fuel tank

This project aims to develop a concept for a large-capacity PHEV fuel tank using advanced plastic manufacturing technologies. Following initial literature review of current PHEV fuel tank technologies, you’ll work with existing fuel tank suppliers to understand their processes and technology. After scoping different concepts of technical solutions for deep plastic PHEV tanks, you’ll use a concept selection process to confirm an optimum solution by considering vehicle functional requirements, manufacturing feasibility and cost.

Working alongside Jaguar Land Rover’s Design team, you’ll create a 3D model of the PHEV fuel tank concept, and you’ll further engage with the team as well as CAE teams to conduct initial functional analysis (pertaining to performance, NVH and modal durability). There may be a possibility to conduct physical validation of prototype parts (TBC).

Key Interactions

Within your designated project, there will be a number of key interactions. These will include the Jaguar Land Rover Mentor, University Mentor, Technical Specialist and Subject Matter Experts, Design and CAE Engineers, Research Engineers, Group Leaders, Intellectual Property Officers, external suppliers and government, EU and other research-funding bodies.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

For this role, it is essential that you are pursuing a postgraduate degree in Engineering or Science and have an understanding of CAD and CAE tool functionality. In addition, you should display a keen interest in powertrain systems.

As well as an ability to collect and analyse concept and requirement data from multiple sources, it is desirable that you’ll have a good working knowledge of alternative or advanced materials or have an awareness of manufacturing processes. Being familiar with the automotive industry, including competitors, market and legislative requirements, will also stand you in good stead.

Personal Profile

This role will have you heavily rely on your project management capabilities and the ability to multitask while working independently. Self-motivated and able to collate data from multiple sources, you’ll round out your profile with strong communication skills and an ability to critically analyse large volumes of interactive requirements data.

Ideally, you’ll also be a naturally resilient and enthusiastic individual capable of delivering results under pressure whilst responding constructively to new ideas and inputs. All this will ensure you make the most of this exciting opportunity to gain a strong foothold in the industry and advance your future career.
