Job description

Postgraduate Research Student – Powertrain Engine Control Research

PROJECT START: As soon as a successful candidate is found

PROJECT DURATION: Six to Twelve Months

LOCATION:  UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK / UK

Jaguar Land Rover Powertrain Research

The Powertrain Research and Technology departments are responsible for delivering robust new and innovative technologies into the Jaguar Land Rover. The Research department is responsible for developing advanced powertrain technologies including Exhausts, Fuel, Air intake, Engine control and FEA.

The Team:

Powertrain Control Research are responsible for the development of future control strategies within RCP, software requirement definition, support development of proof of concept technology demonstrators and also tools that can be used throughout the business to support efficient calibration. The team supports a range of current research projects covering engine, transmission and hybrid control.

You’ll be given a choice of one of our two projects.

Project Title 1: Electrical Engineering – Development of RCP test harnesses.

Project Start: As soon as a successful candidate is found.

Project Duration: Six months

In this project, your aim will be to work alongside Electrical Engineers to support the development of RCP test harnesses. You’ll need to develop wiring specifications for link harnesses to match production engine wiring to generic RCP ECU with configurable pins, maintaining your own documentation pertaining to wiring specifications for complex research demonstrator engines. You’ll also conduct electrical tests of sensors and actuators, reverse-engineering component specifications where they are missing.

This project will allow you to develop fault-finding capability as you debug wiring issues with prototype engine harnesses, and you will also gain experience working with the calibration tool INCA to measure data and flash new software.

Project Title 2: Software Engineering – RCP Software Development

Project Start: As soon as a successful candidate is found.

Project Duration: Six months.

Your main objective in this project will be to identify control issues within embedded RCP software and develop novel solutions to these issues. To this end, you’ll capture and document control issues found during research projects, and you’ll work with technical experts on this data to analyse potential existing solutions. You’ll also set out to perform primary investigation into issues to identify novel solutions as well as identifying business cases, developing test functions in Simulink to recreate issues and demonstrating how they can be resolved.

By providing support to further development of standalone ECUs within the team, your participation in the project will allow you to gain an understanding of the role, function and limitations. In addition, you’ll be given an opportunity to develop batch and MATLAB scripts that can be used to automate RCP software builds by using third-party toolchains.

Key Interactions

Within your designated project, there will be a number of key interactions. These will include Test Engineers, Research Engineers, Group Leaders and Research Managers, Powertrain Technical Specialists, Research Senior Management, universities and external suppliers.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

For each of the two roles, it is essential that you are pursuing a postgraduate degree in engineering or science, and you’ll need to demonstrate experience in overall base engine technology, both gasoline and Diesel. You’ll have a practical approach, which you’ll put to use interfacing with Technicians and Engineers from within Jaguar Land Rover as well as external suppliers. You’ll make the most of your role being an enthusiastic and proactive individual, also one who is willing to learn and progress – both professionally and on a personal level.

Although not essential, it is desirable that you’ll come with good working knowledge of engines and their respective technologies and of alternative / advanced software toolsets (such as INCA, Vector, CANalyzer etc). It is also likely you’ll have a knowledge of the automotive industry, including competitor and market awareness, as well as experience of mechanical and electrical systems architecture.

Personal Profile

Each of the roles will require you to use your ability to multitask, pick up multiple projects and also chop and change between a variety of altering project requirements. You’ll be comfortable with cross-functional engineering disciplines and able to understand both Mechanical and Electrical perspectives. It will also be important for you to communicate effectively at a variety of business environments.

Ideally, your varied set of skills and capabilities will be rounded out by a resilient and enthusiastic persona, and you’ll find your project a rewarding experience being an individual able to deliver results under pressure whilst constructively responding to new ideas and expanding requirements.

Disclaimer

This project is offered to those who are pursuing a postgraduate degree (at least MSc or equivalent) as a part of the Research Postgraduate Placement Scheme. All placements are offered on a fixed term contract and must complete within twelve months, or sooner if specified in the start and completion information as part of this specification. You will agree with your manager on a suitable start and finish time and project objectives aligned with your technical interests and business needs. Students must already have a Right to Work in the UK visa for the complete duration of the placement, and be able to undertake 40 hours per week, each week, for the duration of the project.
