Research Staff Member – Machine Learning for Healthcare

The IBM Research Lab in Dublin seeks talented, experienced and enthusiastic researchers to join our AI for Health & Social Care team.
We are looking for experienced candidates with excellent technical skills who are willing to go beyond scientific investigation and follow their work through to impact, by building assets for IBM products and clients while advancing the state-of-the-art in AI and Healthcare Informatics. You will work with cutting edge technologies and with our worldwide research team to engineer and design machine learning algorithms, services and end-to-end solutions in the healthcare space.
As a research staff member, you will be expected to define challenging problems, design and develop novel solutions together with working with business & development teams to ensure that these solutions have a significant impact. The ability to communicate and demonstrate innovative concepts to other research and product teams is essential. For this position, you will need to be able to work efficiently in a team with limited supervision.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise:
- PhD in Computer Science with specialization in Machine Learning, Health- Medical- or Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics or Epidemiology
- Ability and willingness to acquire new skills on-the-go
- Proven experience in machine learning model design and validation on real-world data, particularly in the healthcare space
- Excellent analytical skills including problem-solving, programming and algorithmic skills
- Ability to execute research challenges, starting from problem definition to a working implementation
- Previous experience working in team environments with limited supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise:
- Experience with knowledge-based systems
- Strong publication record in top-tier conferences and journals in machine learning (e.g., NIPS, ICML, ICLR, SDM)
- Strong publication record in top-tier conferences and journals in medical informatics and/or medicine (e.g., MedInfo, MIE, ICHI, JAMIA, Lancet, NEJM)
- Experience of healthcare environments (either clinical/non-clinical) and knowledge of the complexities of health data, terminologies and ontologies in the field
- Understanding of the key current issues and challenges facing the healthcare industry with a specific focus on Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
- Experience in writing research proposals
- Project management skills
