Job description

Role Purpose

The trade economist will contribute original research as part of the Research-Economics team, while also providing related analytical advice and support to other parts of HSBC. The overarching objective is to identify trade-related economic opportunities and risks. The incumbent will monitor and assess trade policies and practices, especially as they relate to trade costs and ability to trade. The scope will include national, regional and global developments. It may concern goods or services, exports or imports, and products at all stages of production. Factors that influence trade-related supply or demand may also be considered. The role includes presentation of findings to stakeholders. The successful job holder will have the ability to work independently and deliver commercially-relevant trade research.

Principal Accountabilities: Key activities and decision making areas

The core assignment is to develop original, commercially-relevant research on the economics of trade for use in Global Research publications including thematic reports, flash reports and newsletters. Other research products may be developed on an ad hoc basis as needs arise. Duties may involve statistical and econometric work and related support for other team members, analysis of trade and trade policy developments, qualitative research (e.g. literature reviews), and preparation of analytical texts and presentations, among other possibilities. The work may be at times conducted independently or on a collaborative basis.

Customers and Stakeholders

Development of qualitative research on stakeholder perspectives and industry views.

Special short-term research assignments may arise in response to client requests. Presentation of research findings in client meetings, under the supervision of the senior trade economist.

Leadership & Teamwork

Openness to consult with colleagues and collaborate on joint activities as necessary. Provision of analytical advice and support to colleagues in Global Research and in other parts of HSBC working on trade issues.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

Applied understanding of HSBC global standards and functional instruction manual.

Major Challenges

The geographic coverage of the position is global. The substance will vary depending on the emerging issues covered in the newsletter and thematic papers. Moreover, clients may raise additional issues. Thus, a major challenge will be to demonstrate an ability to deal with multiple tasks and an evolving scope of work.

The work will need to be conducted in a consultative and collaborative manner in order to develop synergies, close any gaps in knowledge and avoid redundancy in efforts.

Role Context

The economist will work in consultation with the senior economist, who will provide guidance on the overall research direction and define key intermediate tasks and deliverables.

The holder of the position will need to have mastered economic concepts and analytical techniques, demonstrating an ability to handle tasks in an independent manner.

The holder of the position will need to satisfy HSBC standards and operational requirements, appropriate for the Global Career Band.

Management of Risk

The holder of the position is to be familiar with HSBC standards and requirements in relation to operational risks and apply them, demonstrating:

- Understanding of his/her responsibilities for managing one's own operational risks

- Understanding of how to respond to an operational risk incident.

Observation of Internal Controls

Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.

Understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.

Desired profile

Qualifications :

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

• Education: Master's degree or PhD in economics (or a closely-related field) or MBA

• Substantial hands-on data experience with Excel including competence in use of Visual Basic for Applications; also familiarity with a statistical analytical package (e.g., EViews or Stata or Matlab)

• Ability to write clearly and convey sometimes complex material in an accessible manner for readers

• Ability to work well in a team; ability to contribute flexibly in a dynamic workplace environment
