HSBC Asset Management (AM), the investment management business of the HSBC Group, serves HSBC’s worldwide customer base of retail and private clients, intermediaries, corporates and institutions invested in both segregated accounts and pooled funds. The ESG Data Engineer position will centre on ESG data capabilities, emphasizing data governance, utilisation, analysis, and dissemination throughout all investment strategies and wider functions. They will guarantee precise focus on data quality, understand the mapping and methodology of different data vendors and points, and serve as a bridge between data management and end-users. The role holder will work with various business sectors to offer appropriate internal access and supervision of ESG data. Additionally, they will ready data for prescriptive and predictive modelling, analyse and structure raw data, perform detailed data analysis, and present findings in reports.

In this role you will:


• Ensure data ingestion and onboarding are correctly implemented in relevant Front Office systems like Refinitiv, Bloomberg, and HSBC Analytics.

• Verify and uphold data quality through systematic checks, overseeing data location, aggregation, and availability.

• Perform intricate data analysis, explore ways to improve data quality, and prepare data for prescriptive and predictive modelling.

• Utilize both structured and unstructured data to create an exclusive ESG scoring framework, conduct research, produce governance signals, and develop visual representations of these scores.

• Assist in executing and evolving the in-house Voyager tool, including data normalization, and collaborate with ESG vendors on mapping rules, data quantity and quality, all concerning data oversight.


To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:


• Essential: High proficiency in programming languages, particularly Python and PySpark, with a strong ability to utilise analytical tools and interpret data effectively.

• Demonstrated proficiency with SQL databases and cloud warehouse technologies like BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, among others.

• Hands-on experience with Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) systems, especially in data transformation, along with technical knowledge in data models, data mining, and segmentation methods.

• Sound understanding of financial markets and financial instruments, combined with an interest in sustainability.

• Proficient in Excel, strong problem-solving abilities, highly organised and demonstrates a sharp eye for detail.


This role is based in Birmingham.
