Global Legal plays an important role in protecting HSBC's reputation, helping to safeguard the organisation by providing robust and comprehensive advice on legal issues and risks. Our lawyers advise senior management and the Global Businesses and Functions. They offer a range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all the countries and territories in which HSBC operates.

Key Objectives for Associate General Counsel:

This role provides legal advice, guidance, and support to HSBC Bank Canada's Wealth business (WB) in order to ensure that its exposure to legal risk is managed, which includes identifying, formulating, coordinating, and communicating policies, procedures and controls. The role will oversee legal support for Wealth business, including supervising a team of legal counsel.

Principle Accountabilities:
· Provide prompt counsel on a variety of legal matters including matters that are quite technical, complex or have potential for significant impact on the organization in a commercially sensitive, practical and cost-effective manner.
· Implement legal policies to ensure that Wealth business' exposure to legal risks is managed appropriately.
· Be pro-active in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications.
· Ensure the Deputy General Counsel for Wealth business is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business areas and major legislative changes in area of expertise.
· Provide legal consultation in the development phase of products/ services or development of polices and procedures that internally impact Wealth business.
· Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all team members within Wealth business.
· Lead, manage, review, guide and support lawyers and/or support staff that report to the jobholder.
· Participate in the coordination and promotion of initiatives that result in the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the Regional / Global Legal Function.
· Lead change management and innovation within the team in order to simplify and create efficiencies for the team and the business.

Desired profile



Qualifications :

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications:
·  Minimum of ten years proven and progressive corporate legal experience, or equivalent. Management experience preferred.
·  Minimum of a Bachelor of Laws and/or Juris Doctorate degree as well as called to the Bar in a Province in Canada.
·  In depth knowledge of National Instruments 81-101, 81-102, 81-106, 81-107 and 31-103
·  Strong expertise in Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA) and Investment Industry Organization of Canada (IIROC) Rules in addition to Client Focused Reforms
·  Sound knowledge of privacy law
·  Broad and deep understanding of asset management, portfolio managers, mutual fund dealer and Order Execution Only (OEO) business, related regulatory rules and laws, industry issues
·  Strong advocacy, negotiation, managerial, interpersonal, organizational, legal research and communication skills as well as an ability to look at the “bigger picture”
·  Ability to quickly apply abstract concepts of law and make quick, innovative decisions to resolve problems
