BPR (BioPharm Process Research) straddles biology discovery and product development. We are in the exciting world of developing new purification processes and then transferring them to manufacturing for phase 1 supply. We work with a range of molecules from the more challenging molecules such a domain antibodies and recombinant proteins to molecules such as mAbs that render themselves amenable to platform purification, characterising any risks and beginning to identify critical quality attributes. The downstream group is diverse in every sense hence an easy fit for new starters.

We are currently recruiting a Protein Purification Scientist to be based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK. This role will see you working with the team in order to support process development activities.

The successful candidate will be involved with a diverse range of activities including:

• Assisting in the timely development of outline downstream processes which can be scaled up to clinical supply and risk highlighting packages
• Use of high-throughput automation in process development.
• Staying current with Downstream Development technology improvements and implement according to business need
• Working with key customers (eg Process and Analytical Development) to ensure alignment of processes and practices.
• Assisting in the successful and timely transfer of processes to and from testing labs or scale up development group.
• Contributing to project and matrix teams as appropriate
• Seeking all opportunities to develop and maintain a strong IP position.
• Maintaining relationships with external professional, trade, and scientific organisations consistent with GSK business needs.

Desired profile

Basic qualifications:
• BSc, MSc or PhD in Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering or equivalent.
• Background in Protein Sciences and Biomanufacturing.
• Must be competent in running AKTA platforms such as AKTA Avant, AKTA Explorer and AKTA Pilot.
• Must be able to perform quantitative and qualitative protein assay techniques.
• Experience of working on complex research projects both as an individual and as part of a team.

Preferred qualifications:
• Excellent planning skills.
• Good communication skills.
• Understanding of common downstream processing unit operations and Bioprocess development (with a focus at the early stage).
• Familiar with Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) and Quality by Design (QBD) concepts and approaches.
• Understanding of how the production of a protein can impact its structure and function and vice versa.
