Your Responsibilities :
This exciting collaborative post-doctoral project will provide further training in an integrated academia-industry setting that combines the skills and expertise of scientists at the Francis Crick Institute with those at GSK. Project work will be conducted at GSK's R&D centre in Stevenage and in Andreas Wack's Immunoregulation Laboratory lab at the Crick. The focus of the project will be to investigate the function of a disease-associated gene and its protein isoforms in models of epithelial and immune cell biology through the application of gene perturbation and chemical biology tool approaches.

Project outline and goals:
• Investigation of the role of a specific disease-associated gene in airway epithelial cell and immune cell function using gene knockdown methods and novel molecular tools in in vitro and ex vivo phenotypic models.
• Investigation of the mechanistic impact of genetic perturbation and molecular modulation through the application of transcriptomic and proteomic approaches.
• To collaboratively support the evaluation of specific molecular tool approaches through the application of your cell biology / immunology knowledge.
• This is a multi-faceted project with a strong interdisciplinary focus. The project will be co-supervised by GSK and Crick scientists and has considerable scope to evolve in multiple directions subject to success.
This position is for a laboratory-based cell biologist or immunologist with a strong interest in applying gene perturbation and chemical biology approaches to the discovery of the underlying mechanisms through which a disease-associated gene impacts immune and epithelial barrier functions.
The successful candidate can expect an excellent training in in vitro models of epithelial and immune cell biology, genetic perturbation and the application of chemical biology techniques in complex cell models, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with GSK and Crick experts working in other disciplines; particularly chemical biology, computational biology, functional genomics, biochemistry and proteomics.
Postdoc Experiences and Responsibilities
• Your postdoctoral training will involve tremendous support from world-class GSK and Crick scientists. GSK will provide you with a mentor to supervise your training, this will be a high-calibre scientist from within our R&D community.
• Research associates are actively encouraged to present their research at internal and external meetings. Mentors are expected to nurture skills that will enable postdoctoral research associates to develop into independent scientific investigators.
• You will demonstrate passion for solving biological problems through the innovative application of molecular and chemical biology approaches, data mining techniques and an enthusiasm to work alongside computational biologists to acquire the skillsets to carry out complex data analytics.

• First or upper second class honours degree in cell biology / immunology / biochemistry / molecular biology.
• Completion of Ph.D./D.Phil. in the field of cell biology / immunology.
• A comprehensive knowledge of contemporary cell biology and immunology techniques and their application to investigate intracellular protein function.
• Experience in flow cytometry, advanced light microscopy, image analysis or immunological assays.
• Experience of effective collaborative working in an integrated setting with in vivo biologists, chemical biologists and computational biologists.
• Strong track record of innovation and delivery across a broad biology base, supported by publications in top ranking peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability to understand, interpret and communicate complex scientific data.
• Ability to be productive and successful in a demanding work environment.
• Ability to approach research problems with initiative and flexibility.
• Commitment to contribute strongly to the highly collaborative culture between GSK and the Francis Crick Institute, which will include frequent travel between Stevenage and London.
• Commitment to continuous professional improvement.
• Proficient in verbal and written English, with strong communication skills.
• Excellent working knowledge of the genetic perturbation and chemical biology techniques (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9, pharmacological inhibition) used to understand intracellular signalling pathways.
• Experience with air-liquid interface cultures and/or advanced assays of immune cell function.
• A strong interest in the application of novel molecular tools (small molecules or polypeptides) for drug target identification and validation.
• A good balance of creative and analytical skills.
• Ability to digest and clearly present highly technical information to other scientists, including experts in the field.
• Experience in applying analytical approaches to interrogate large, complex datasets and generate hypotheses.
• Experience of supervising and developing other scientists.
