Job description

Details:
The Protein Degradation Discovery Performance Unit (DPU) is developing a new therapeutic modality which aims to harness cellular protein regulation mechanisms via the ubiquitin-proteasome system to reduce levels of disease-causing proteins within cells. This approach gives efficacy typically associated with siRNA approaches but with all the advantages of dosing convenience and bio-distribution of a small molecule. The technology represents a novel and exciting approach to drug discovery which is being applied across a number of areas including inflammation, respiratory disease & oncology with the potential to extend to a wide range of additional diseases and pathologies. The DPU has a portfolio of pre-clinical projects currently advancing rapidly towards clinical evaluation as well as a number of exploratory efforts to expand the reach of the approach.
To help accelerate efforts to apply this exciting new technology, an opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and skilled lab-based biologist to join our team supporting current and future programmes, projects and biomarker development and play a significant role in advancing our portfolio of programmes. The biologist must be highly innovative, proactive and effective in a collaborative and matrix-working environment.

Accountabilities/responsibilities will include the following:

• Design, validate, conduct and analyse biological/pharmacological assays to provide biological data to programme teams.
• Development of methods appropriate for detecting target engagement and pathway modulation in cell lines, primary cells and tissue assays.
• Interpretation and communication of key data related to projects and capability developments.
• Quantitative analysis of pharmacological data to provide information such as potency, efficacy and kinetic measurements to programme teams.
• May support experimental strategies for in vitro aspects of in vivo pharmacological investigations.
• Authorship of internal experimental reports on candidate compound pharmacology supporting candidate selection/clinical investigator brochures.
• Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety training and practice and support of operational working practices of the DPU as required.

Application Closing Date: 31st January 2017

Please indicate within your cover letter if you are confirmed as displaced (or potentially displaced) and at risk of redundancy.
