Role Summary/Purpose

The Structures and Durability Laboratory (S&DL) at GE Research develops innovative structural mechanics technologies for GE products across the Aviation, Renewables, Power, and Healthcare businesses. The S&DL has focus areas in structural mechanics/dynamics and lifing/durability.
Essential Responsibilities

Key capabilities include areas such as: finite element modeling/analysis, structural design/optimization, design for additive manufacturing, composite materials, structural dynamics/aeromechanics, fatigue, fracture mechanics, and environmental durability. Although most of the work is analytical, the S&DL is also involved in component validation and testing using state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. 
As a Summer Intern in the S&DL, you will perform applied research in either structural mechanics/dynamics or lifing/durability applications under the guidance of an experienced researcher. Opportunities may include involvement in areas such as structural optimization, structural dynamics, design for additive manufacturing, and lifing analysis (e.g., fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep, etc.) for applications across the GE businesses.

As an intern, you will:  

·  Perform research under the guidance of a mentor in any of the core areas within the S&DL at GE Research. 
·  Collaborate as part of a team with other GE researchers and/or with GE business. 
·  Attend and contribute in team meetings to communicate project status. 
·  Prepare and deliver presentations, reports and publications as requested by the GE mentor. 
·  Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.

Qualifications/Requirements

·  Current enrollment pursuing a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering 

·  Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY 
·  Must be 18 years or older

Desired Characteristics

• Analytical capability in at least one of the Lab’s focus areas (i.e., structural mechanics/dynamics or lifing/durability).
• Familiarity with 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, etc), commercial finite element tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, etc.), or computer programming languages (e.g., Python, C, MATLAB, Fortran, etc.).
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Execution mindset and sense of urgency.
