Role Summary/Purpose

Senior Counsel - Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) will provide counseling, strategic legal advice and leadership to GE Renewable Energy, with substantial operations worldwide.

Essential Responsibilities

The Senior EHS Counsel will be an integral member of the Legal Department, reporting directly to Executive EHS Counsel, working closely with the broader business legal team and EHS professionals to support the EHS legal needs of the business, maintain full regulatory compliance and enhance GE’s reputation for EHS excellence.  In this role, you will be responsible for a diverse array of substantive projects and matters with long-term business implications, managing complex issues within your area of expertise, and contributing to the overall business strategy, including:

·  Provide day-to-day legal advice to all of Renewable Energy’s global operations on a variety of environmental and workplace safety issues, including compliance counseling on applicable EHS requirements concerning air and water emissions, waste management, chemical management, occupational health and safety, product safety and stewardship, acquisitions and divestitures, property development, remediation and real estate
·  Represent the business before regulatory agencies, including enforcement proceedings, administrative hearings and preparation and review of permit applications;
·  Provide leadership to Renewable Energy businesses on EHS aspects of commercial transactions, product development and product safety, and review and negotiate commercial contract terms and conditions with customers and suppliers;
·  Support environmental due diligence and negotiation of EHS contract terms for business acquisitions, divestitures and property transactions;   
·  Participate in compliance audits of manufacturing facilities and project sites;
·  Support legal issues related to remedial liabilities arising from historical operations and acquisitions;
·  Manage outside litigation, if necessary, in a cost-effective manner to achieve business objectives;
·  Conduct training and provide regulatory updates on EHS legal developments and risks;
·  Work closely with other legal functional teams (e.g. compliance, litigation, sourcing, etc.) to support related matters and coordinate with GE Corporate to implement best practices and strategic advice.
Qualifications/Requirements

·  Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
·  Minimum of 5 additional years of EHS legal experience with a corporation, law firm or governmental agency providing working knowledge of environmental health and safety laws and regulations

·  In-house counsel registration and/or member in good standing with a State Bar in the United States
·  Strong oral and written communication and persuasive skills, including executive-level communication
·  Ability to take initiative and act independently with sound judgment, with little or no daily supervision

·  Strong problem-solving skills, pragmatism and flexibility/resilience
·  Ability to interact effectively with senior management and peers and all other levels of the organization
·  Ability and confidence to work in a complex and matrixed organization in a collaborative and boundaryless manner and to simultaneously manage and prioritize numerous and varied tasks
