Role Summary/Purpose

The Performance & Operability team is seeking a controls engineer with demonstrated wind turbine system and controls expertise. The Lead Wind Control Systems & Operability Engineer is an integral part of the wind product and design process. This is a global engineering role where the scope includes design, implementation, and validation of dynamic and operational control systems that meet product needs.

Essential Responsibilities

The broad scope of responsibility provides an opportunity to optimize turbine performance and operability.

As the Lead Wind Control Systems & Operability Engineer, you will:

·  Participate in the development and enhancement of control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, and at the same time allow the turbine to run with high availability
·  Implement and validate control algorithms in both the loads simulation environment as well as on the GE MarkVIe PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) according to the product requirements flow-down
·  Investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions
·  Cooperate with the Loads and Validation teams to analyze the impact of the controls strategy on the mechanical loads of the turbine in simulation and through the evaluation of measurement data
·  Establish “first principle” wind turbine control methodologies to improve overall system optimization and physics based understanding
·  Provide key wind turbine controls expertise through all phases of product development from requirements definition through design and development, validation and product life-cycle support
·  Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters
·  Contribute to the continuous improvement of the controller development and loads simulation infrastructure

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.

Desired Characteristics

·  Strong oral and written communication skills
·  Problem analysis and resolution skills
·  Experience with wind turbine control systems strongly preferred but not mandatory
·  Master's Degree with a focus on controls, wind energy, or system dynamics
·  Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and basic knowledge in modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory
·  Proficiency in Matlab / Simulink or similar program
·  Proficiency in at least one aero-elastic wind turbine simulation tool such as Bladed, Fast, or Flex
·  Experience with real-time control systems such as MarkVIe
·  Knowledge of at least one programming language such as C or Delphi
·  Experience with the wind turbine mechanical loads certification process according to IEC 61400-1
·  Ability to interface effectively with all levels of the organization and external customers
