The Role – EID Intern

As an EID Intern you will report to the Power Electronics Development Team Manager within the Valves Technology Department. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the development of new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”.  This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valves are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.

The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. 

The role will involve working in the project delivery of the Valves Department for the first 6 months, where skills such as communication, time management and building up of knowledge of the technologies of the business. The second half of the placement is going to be based in the Valves R&D, where the candidate will get an opportunity to develop their technical and lab skills. The will be involved in R&D processes from design to testing to verification.

Responsibilities:

  • Circuit simulation for design and testing
  • Specification of key power electronics components
  • Compile DFMEA and design document
  • Ability to undertake technical reviews of technology with engineering experts
  • Implement and perform validation tests and design-proving tests
  • Work closely with supply chain for power electronics components
  • Integration with other departments (engineering, manufacturing, S&P, SQA) for product development and support tendering and project delivery
  • Actively broadening and deepening HVDC knowledge
  • Familiarity with REACH compliance and environmental impact of their work
  • Strict adherence to safety policies and promote EHS within the team

The Person

  • The candidate will have completed 2 years of degree level in a related science such as electronics and electrical engineering or equivalent knowledge or experience. However, this is not as important as a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role.
  • Candidate should show familiarity with concepts of power electronics and passive components such as inductors and capacitors. They should also demonstrate interest in power electronics and willingness to learn more.

Skills and Experience:

  • Power Electronics, High Voltage or all relevant electrical engineering knowledge
  • Power electronic components (IGBTs, thyristors, passive components)
  • Report writing and reviewing
  • Testing experience
  • Ability to interact with other engineering disciplines and good at sharing knowledge
  • EHS compliance ability
  • On track to achieve 2:1 at the end of the University degree

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge/understanding of high-power and high-voltage design and control issues
  • Understanding of multi-modular converters
  • High Voltage engineering
  • Willingness to develop ability in product design, validation and industrialisation
