The Operating Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and is responsible for providing building support services that ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for the University community by operating complex high-pressure steam and chilled water systems. You will be expected to behave in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, be flexible with respect to scheduling, and work as part of a team. The position is designated “Emergency Employee” by the University’s definition, which requires that incumbent report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early and you must be able to be flexible to accommodate emergency situations including snow removal.
This position is located in Washington, D.C., reports to the Chief Engineer, and works closely with the University staff.
What you’ll do:
· Maintain a safe, comfortable campus environment by operating, controlling, and performing preventive/predictive maintenance on the HVACR, Electrical, Mechanical, and Life Safety building systems 24/7
· Successfully operate automated building management systems, controls, pumps, heat exchangers, water treatment, cooling towers, boilers, fire alarm, sprinkler, emergency generator, elevator, and various other mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems and equipment associated with the operation of large buildings
· Assist with overall regulatory and code compliance of all building systems as required by Law and local jurisdictions
· Provide technical and logistical support to the facility
· Be available for 24-hour emergency call
What you bring:
· Valid driver’s license from Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia and must conform to University Driving Policy
· Must have a DC 3rd Class Steam Engineers and EPA Universal CFC License
· High School Diploma
· A minimum of four (4) years previous work experience
· A minimum of three years training or experience in trade practice of steam engineering
· Previous experience with the operation and troubleshooting of gauges and instruments on equipment to bring about satisfactory operation
· An understanding to operate the complex operation of high-pressure steam and chilled water systems which can be operated several ways depending on operational needs
· Ability to learn and an understanding of equipment conditions and the operation of same
· Good communication skills between fellow workers and supervisors are required
· Building Automation Control operation experience
· Ability to read blueprints
· Must be eligible to work for any U.S. employer without the need for sponsorship now or in the future
· Must possess a valid U.S. drivers license and clear driving record
· Must be willing and able to comply with ENGIE’s policy with respect to COVID vaccination and testing
· Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
· Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
· Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
