The Role: Assistant Watch Engineer

Purpose  
Operates and performs routine operating maintenance of steam, chilled water and electrical generating equipment for MATEP, LLC, satellite facilities and utility distribution system. Under the direction of the Watch Engineer, operates and maintains chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and related auxiliary equipment. Maintains logs, prepares equipment for operations or shutdown condition, monitors instrument readings and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions 

·  Participates in the starting, control, operation, shutdown and inspection of chillers, pumps, cooling towers and all associated equipment
·  Monitors instrumentation and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for proper operating conditions, determines nature and cause of trouble and performs necessary corrective action to protect personnel, equipment, system integrity and maintain system efficiency and safety
·  Prepares logs and other operating records including data collection via the plant computer
·  Performs regular inspection tours of the plant and distribution system including underground tunnels and electrical power systems
·  Operates and performs routine operating maintenance and preventive maintenance, including cleaning of equipment (pumps, water conditioning equipment, etc.)
·  May assume responsibilities of Operations Supervisor in his/her absence
·  Performs boiler start-up and control, including burner light-off, adjustments for optimum firing, soot blowing, burner changing and cleaning and other duties
·  Assists Watch Engineer as required, with the operation and control of electrical generating equipment, chiller operation and diesel engine operations
·  Performs routine operating maintenance, including cleaning of equipment and plant work areas
·  May participate as a member of plant firefighting brigade.
·  Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices, and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and company standards and, where applicable, local, state, and federal laws
·  Must participate in mandatory training and other programs.
·  Performs other related duties as required

Requirements

·  Valid Massachusetts state driver’s license
·  Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Third Class Engineer’s License. Valid CFC-2 and CFC-3 license; or, a CFC-universal license
·  May be required to obtain a Second Class Industrial Wastewater Treatment license
·  Must be able to work internally in the physical plant and externally on the facility’s grounds or at satellite facilities
·  May be required to work overtime - relief, off-shift, and emergency coverage (nights, weekends, etc.) and/or other, as needed
·  High degree of professionalism
·  Ability to work well independently, and effectively with others, daily
·  Detail oriented
·  Ability to take direction
·  Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively
·  A willingness to acquire new skills and utilize technology to streamline processes and problem solve is essential Emergency Status Designation

·  Essential Essential Physical Abilities

·  The employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing where appropriate because of their work around potential hazards such as loud noise, airborne particles, vibration and hazardous materials
·  This protective equipment includes, but is not limited to, safety eyewear, footwear, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, specialized clothing and a company issued uniform
·  Must be able to work in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions
·  Must be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and other materials such as diesel and lube oils
·  Under certain conditions, while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator – respirators are required in specified areas, therefore the employee will be issued with and trained in the proper use of this equipment
·  At no time is facial hair permitted
·  May require repetitive stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and carrying; intermittent lifting, and moving up to 65-pound objects alone; may carry and transport up to 50 pounds; and move heavier objects with assistance
·  Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, high-lifts, and in confined spaces Education/Experience 

·  High School graduate or equivalent
·  Minimum of two years’ work experience in power plant operations
