Job description

Entreprise:
WHO WE ARE:
Saint-Gobain, the world leader in the habitat and construction markets, designs, manufactures and distributes building materials, providing innovative solutions to meet growing demand in emerging economies, for energy efficiency and for environmental protection. Saint-Gobain is a welcoming, solid, open-minded company that offers long-term career opportunities. Our company is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of building materials, and a leader in the production of high-performance materials, operating in 66 countries. Saint-Gobain was founded in 1665 and is headquartered in Paris, France. The company had sales of $ 39.6 billion in 2015 and employs more than 170,000 people worldwide.
MORE ABOUT NORTHBORO R&D CENTER:
Saint-Gobain’s High-Performance Materials Group is a dynamic, global business with research and development activities centered in Northboro, Massachusetts (NRDC). The Northboro operation has been a major center for materials research since 1985. We have an outstanding record of achievement, and are committed to growth through the development of proprietary products based on novel materials and process technologies. The 186,000-square-foot R&D Center is based in three buildings on a 26-acre site near I-290 in Northboro and has approximately 350 employees from 30 different countries.
Poste et missions:
To serve the challenging needs of aerospace and automotive industries, the Engineered Component (ENC) group is developing advanced engineering materials that can be used under severe conditions (high temperature, high pressure, high speed, w/wo lubrication, etc.).
In this position you will be joining the ENC R&D group based in Northborough R&D Center (MA, USA). You will be working on developing a new generation high performance materials which are optimized for overall performance: mechanical strength, thermal stability and tribological performance. The latter are key properties, which require unique testing capabilities to compete with commercial solutions available on the market.
The scope of this project is two folds:
Part I: Material development:
- Identify high performance polymers that can be used for this study and benchmark them with commercial products.
- Lab scale formulation development using small compounder based on the identified material, characterization, structure-property relationship analysis. Make recommendations for different applications.
- Pilot scale production of optimized formulation. Produce prototypes for application testing.
Part II: Comprehensive tribology testing competency development and utilize it for testing the material developed in Part I:
- Develop versatile testing capabilities using Bruker UMT3 tribometer with SOP (HT, Multi-load ranges, lubricated, different testing modes).
- Establish testing methodologies for testing high performance material for generic application conditions.
- Utilize the established testing conditions to assist PART I study, and customer testing requests.
The deliverables of this project are:
- Technical report on testing and study of high performance polymers
- SOP on new developed testing capabilities
- Case study of plant requests in presentation or technical report
- Regular presentations to group on proposed methodologies
Profil:
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of basic polymer materials science and mechanical engineering/mechanics
- Familiarity/experience with advanced instrument testing (device and software)
- Ability to conduct methodology development with supervision
- Ability to work with diverse people and technical backgrounds
- Design of experiments and Data Analysis
- Physical ability to handle equipment in R&D and pilot scale
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
- MS or PhD degree in Material Science and Engineering or other relevant Engineering Degree.
- Good written and oral communication skills including formal presentation of results.
- Must be able to communicate (oral and written) sufficiently in English.
