Job description

Entreprise:
Saint-Gobain North America is a dynamic, global business with research and development activities centered in Northboro, Massachusetts (NRDC). The Northboro operation has been a major center for materials research since 1985. We have an outstanding record of achievement, and are committed to growth through the development of proprietary products based on novel materials and process technologies. The 186,000-square-foot R&D Center is based in three buildings on a 26-acre site near I-290 in Northboro and has approximately 330 employees from 27 different countries.
Poste et missions:
ackground: One of the most cost effective ways to incorporate new functionalities into Saint Gobain products using existing manufacturing infrastructure is through the use of functional coatings. The next generation of materials from Saint Gobain will need to adapt their properties to changing conditions to maximize energy efficiency, performance, and human comfort. The properties of interest could be acoustic, mechanical (tensile strength & tear resistance), thermal, vapor control, chemical (self-cleaning), or electrical (smart sensors & lighting). This internship will pursue the development of two coatings technologies for potential incorporation into Saint Gobain products. One project will formulate a functional coating for a next generation building material and the other will explore new coating process options for improving the performance of an existing Saint-Gobain product line.
Deliverables:
Technical report on formulation and testing of 2 functional coatings
Regular presentations to stakeholders on proposed concepts and results
Roadmap:
Work with manager & business units to plan and execute 2-3 R&D projects
Literature & patent review of existing state of the art
Formulation and process development of functional coatings
Characterization of structure, durability, and performance of coated prototypes
Cost estimation and manufacturability assessment of technology
Scale-up of process (where applicable): lab à pilot à manufacturing
File for patent protection where appropriate
Prepare reports on process & results in a timely fashion
Tools and techniques:
Various mixing & dispersion technologies
Various benchtop, batch, and continuous coating technologies
Design of experiments
Various characterization tools including rheology, infrared spectroscopy, surface metrology, optical and electron microscopy, image analysis, and application specific tests
Profil:
Knowledge of some organic chemistry and/or polymer materials science
Experience with fiberglass composites is a plus
Basic familiarity with a chemistry lab and ability to work in a chemical fume hood
Ability to conduct an academic literature search and synthesize the results
Ability to work with diverse people and groups
Ability to work independently on several projects simultaneously
Design of experiments and Data Analysis
Verbal and written communication skills
