The Technical Marketing Engineer's primary responsibilities are to evangelize and support the Mobile Core Business Unit portfolio to meet business targets and delight Cisco's customers. The TME acts as the internal focal point (“subject matter expert”) for technical portfolio support for the Cisco field in the assigned region.

The TME drives comprehensive technical marketing activities spanning from customer demonstrations and interoperability testing through technical sales, presentations and field training to competitive analysis. The TME closely collaborates with Field Sales, Services and Architecture teams to help these teams scale the business.

You combine a deep understanding of service provider packet core technology and “traditional” IT systems such as provisioning and billing, with the ability to clearly articulate the technical differentiators of Cisco's product and services portfolio.The TME doesn't shy away from ‘hands on' customer demonstrations to illustrate product, solution and technical capabilities in addition to interoperability with surrounding infrastructure.

The TME has a knack for reducing complexity; explaining complex technologies and solutions in a clear, concise and audience appropriate way. The TME is comfortable demonstrating and explaining solutions to all levels within the customer organization, from engineering subject matter experts to the CTO.

In addition to technical aptitude, the TME's interpersonal and presentation skills evoke passion and confidence. The TME combines a passion for technology with a strong ambition for continuous education. Not only does the TME keep himself updated on the ‘latest and greatest', he also enables the Cisco field to stay up-to-date by sharing information and training teams around him.

As a result of his close interaction with customers and Cisco field teams, the TME is expert at gathering customer requirements and identifying portfolio gaps. He acts as the technical advocate for the customer and advices the Policy Business Unit on future product development based on his extensive field experience. For his assigned territory, the TME is up-to-date on the typical usage patterns ,use-cases and plans & innovations encountered in customer infrastructures.

The TME has a relentless focus on quality and eye for detail; “any job worth doing is worth doing well” is his motto. The TME takes pride in his work and is constantly driving for improvement for the better of the Cisco business and ultimately the customer's success. As part of his drive for quality and his desire to share with colleagues, the TME is driven to document his efforts as to enable maximum re-use of his contributions.

Through close interaction with Sales & Architecture teams as well as customers, the TME has a clear overview of the competitive situation in his specific territory. The TME understands the competitors' portfolio and can elaborate on the strengths and weaknesses of the competition. The TME summarizes and distributes competitive information for the benefit of other teams within the larger Cisco organization.

To assure customer satisfaction, the TME interacts with Field Services teams to ensure optimal delivery of customer solutions. The TME drives field team engagement around the repository of validated solutions enabling scale, efficiency and success of deployment. The TME through his intimate market and customer knowledge drives evolution of the use-case repository in close cooperation with Product Line Management and Services teams.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth technical product and technology support for the entire Mobile Core business unit portfolio including validation of the architecture, use cases, bill of material and dimensioning
  • Comfortable executing successful Proof of Concepts, trials, and customer demonstrations with little to no support.
  • Assist field sales and services teams with RFx responses
  • Support early field deployments, testing of new products and concepts, interoperability testing
  • Conduct workshops and trainings for both internal teams, partners, and customers
  • Industry standards knowledge (3GPP, IETF, ETSI)
  • Develop technical documentation including test reports, interoperability guidelines and product guidelines.
  • Comfortable speaking about Cisco mobile technologies and portfolio at trade shows, events, and customer meetings
  • Articulate new customer requirements, trends and issues for products and solutions to product management and engineering teams
  • Analyze and consolidate customer requirements and feed these back into roadmap recommendations, feature prioritization, and new product initiatives


Skills and experience

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as this role requires significant interaction with partners, customers and field personnel and will require the creation of cogent, well-organized and well-written technical and competitive material
  • Must have in-depth technical knowledge in the following areas:
    • Mobile networks; licensed and unlicensed RAN, Packet Core (SGSN/GGSN, MME/SGW/PGW, PCRF, HSS/HLR)
    • Expert level knowledge of RADIUS, DIAMETER and DIAMETER applications (Gx, Gy, Sy, etc)
    • Various Linux based OS flavors (CentOS, RHOS, etc.)
    • Virtualization (VMware, Openstack, KVM, etc.)
  • Ability to work with limited supervision in defining initial goals and addressing complex issues as they arise.
  • Must be willing to travel and on short notice up to 50% (Domesticand International)

Educational background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, Masters Degree a plus
  • 5-10+ years (depending on grade level) overall experience in fields such as technical or product marketing, sales, or engineering
