Position Description:
The Mainframe Developer / Lead will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and enhancing Mainframe applications while also providing leadership to the support team (offshore). This is a hands-on role that combines development and support work with team leadership responsibilities.
The individual must be proactive, able to work independently as well as collaboratively, and capable of leading incident resolution and enhancement efforts. This role requires availability to participate in 24x7 support coverage, including on-call responsibilities.
The supported Mainframe applications are tightly coupled with EDI and Output management tools. The Mainframe developer must be willing to learn and provide support on these additional technology platforms.
Duties/Responsibilities
. Provide application support and maintenance for Mainframe applications.
. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues within agreed SLA timelines.
. Develop, enhance, and maintain applications, ensuring high quality and adherence to coding standards.
. Participate in and perform code reviews, ensuring best practices are followed.
. Prepare and maintain documentation for applications, processes, and procedures.
. Act as the operational acceptance lead for projects, ensuring readiness for production.
. Provide technical leadership by guiding and mentoring team members, assigning tasks, and monitoring progress.
. Act as the primary escalation point for incidents and lead problem management activities.
. Coordinate ongoing maintenance tasks such as server upgrades, patching, and monitoring improvements.
. Communicate effectively with business stakeholders to understand requirements, provide updates, and manage expectations.
. Ensure effective participation in 24x7 on-call rotation, handling high-priority incidents and coordinating team response.
. Drive continuous improvement initiatives in support processes, development standards, and system monitoring.
Attributes and Skills
Technical & Functional
. Strong Mainframe development and troubleshooting expertise.
. Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.
. Experience in application support (L2/L3) with 24x7 availability.
. Knowledge of incident, problem, and change management processes (ITIL or equivalent).
Leadership & Behavioral
. Proven ability to lead a small to medium-sized team while remaining hands-on.
. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
. Ability to prioritize, delegate, and ensure delivery under pressure.
. Skilled in mentoring and knowledge transfer to junior team members.
. Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple parallel tasks.
. Proactive, decisive, and able to make sound judgments during critical incidents.
Education
. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Experience
Must Have:
. Hands-on experience with Mainframe Programming (COBOL, CICS, VSAM, MVS, SQL).
. Experience with VSAM File Editors and Debugging tools like Xpeditor
. Must have strong CICS Programming experience
. Strong working knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle, with proficiency in PL/SQL and Stored Procedures.
. Experience with tools like SQL*Plus, TOAD, or Oracle SQL Developer.
. File Transfer Protocol and SAS
Nice to Have:
. Familiarity with source control systems such as Git or SVN.
. ANSI X12 EDI knowledge
. SFTP and Python scripting
. SSIS/SSRS.
