Reseach Geophysicist - Internship 6 months
CDD 4-6 months Massy (Essonne)
Job description
Job Details
This role is for physicists, mathematicians and geophysicists in their last year of Master-level degree, who are looking for a six-month internship where they can put their theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to develop/test/improve the methods oriented to real Earth imaging problem.
What will you learn?
The world beneath our feet is incredibly complex. It is also the source of the natural resources fundamental to the functioning of our society. In Viridien, we use knowledge of signal processing, wave propagation, and numerical optimization to develop and test high-end algorithms, sequences, or workflows with predefined geophysical or engineering content for our clients.
During your internship, you will be working in subsurface imaging R&D team, in close collaboration with our production department, to meet the production demands and industry trends.
You will have the opportunity to work on the research topic of modeling of elastic-wave propagation and full-waveform inversion (FWI). FWI is now the standard solution to build a velocity model of the subsurface either for land or marine seismic data. In industry, most FWI applications are performed using acoustic approximation-based modeling to reduce computational costs.
Stepping forward to elastic modeling and elastic FWI allows for considering the importance of S-waves, which can be useful in mitigating imaging artefacts related with the acoustic approximation and in providing the subsurface elastic properties for lithology and reservoir characterization. However, compared with the acoustic FWI, elastic FWI can be more vulnerable due to the parameter coupling, wave modes conversion and multi-event interference.
During this internship, you will explore the potential solutions from the following aspects:
- Test the parameter sensitivity of S-wave velocity in the elastic FWI for land data
- Develop and implement algorithms for separating P- and S-waves for analyzing the behavior of complex wave modes in elastic media
Qualifications
- Last year of Masters degree in any of the following disciplines: Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Astrophysics/Astronomy, Natural Sciences with a Physics specialization.
Key Skills and Experiences
- Excellent coding skills with one or more programming languages, such as C/C++, CUDA, FORTRAN, Python, Matlab (Octave)
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of basic geophysical and wave-propagation modeling concepts (this is not mandatory)
- Highly motivated and eager to learn
- Fluent English (read, written, spoken)
Additional information
The role is based in Massy, a town in the greater Parisian region of France.
