SUMMARY: Perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Ability to operate various laboratory equipment and instruments such as physical-analytical, physical, gas chromatography, ion chromatography and research equipment.

Tests materials used as ingredients in adhesives, cement, propellants, lubricants, refectories, synthetic rubber, plastics, paint, paper, cloth, and products for such qualities as purity, stability, viscosity, density, absorption, chromatography, and melting or flash point.

Tests materials for presence and content of elements or substances such as hydrocarbons, H2S, tungsten, sulfur, cyanide, ash, dust, impurities and other chemical elements as required.

Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.

Records test results on standardized forms and/or LIMS and writes test reports describing procedures used.

Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment. Troubleshoots laboratory instruments.

Prepares chemical solutions and standards according to standard formulas.

Adds chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or products batches to correct or establish formulation required to meet specifications.

Works a rotating schedule including weekends, holidays and must be available to work on an on-call basis.

Participates and takes an active role in the BMT meetings and Safety Committee.

Assists in troubleshooting instrumentation problems, calibrations, SQC, and other quality assurance practices and protocols where applicable.

Assures and adequate supply of materials/inventory is available to analyze various products per ASTM, IAC, UOP, IP, Industry Standard, and Customer Test Methods.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer an Associates and/or Bachelor’s in a related field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to do mathematics related to laboratory methodology calculations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Drivers license required.
