Role synopsis

·  The Lubricants Marketing Counsel will be accountable for supporting the Marketing function of the lubricants business. The Lubricants business (automotive, industrial, marine and energy lubricants, global accounts) markets premium, high performance lubricants and solutions around the world, supported by the Global Functions (marketing, supply chain and technology).
·  The role of Marketing is to:
·  Lead the creation of global products and offers, rooted in customer and consumer insights that enable us to win in the market place.
·  Provide tools and techniques that help improve efficiency and quality of strategy execution from sales and marketing capability building to optimising commercial performance
·  Facilitate best practices and connections amongst the sales, marketing and technology communities to develop and drive strategy implementation through three primary networks: Global Marketing Network, OEM Network and Sales Forum
·  Lead and decide the framework and tools for allocation of advertising, sales and promotion investment to enable our growth strategies and Lubes SPU success
·  The Lubricants Marketing Counsel has to deliver advice on a full range of commercial and compliance activities, including general commercial legal work, marketing, sponsorship and promotion matters, anti-trust, anti-bribery and corruption, litigation, international trade regulations and IP.
·  The role is based in Sunbury and will report into the Managing Counsel, Global Functions and Global Marine & Energy Lubricants.

Key accountabilities

·  Develop strong working relationships with the Marketing function and the respective teams beyond active legal matters to become a trusted advisor.
·  Provide practical commercially focused legal advice to the Marketing and Technology functions on a wide range of legal business issues, including advice on prize and sales promotions, product claims and advertising / marketing issues, drafting and negotiating sponsorship and ambassador agreements.
·  Advise on a range of IP issues such as use of image rights, infringement, enforcement, copyright and licensing.
·  Familiarity with direct marketing issues, including data privacy aspects. Knowledge of “Social Media Law”; advise on a range of social media issues, including set-up, content, and app use.
·  Advise on compliance with advertising law and regulations.
·  Proactively manage disputes (including Advertising Regulator challenges) to constructive resolution and providing day to day legal advice to clients across Marketing.
·  Assurance and support on appropriate control framework and risk management process for legal and compliance issues and pro-active risk identification in the business.
·  Developing and implementing training and knowledge management on legal issues impacting the marketing and advertising space, including promotion terms, claims guidance and template contracts as well as ways of working and processes.
·  Collaborate and co-ordinate services from specialist lawyers in BP Legal, and external counsel. Key challenges:

·  Supporting the business and Managing Counsel through a period of cost challenges
·  Become trusted advisor to the Marketing function Manage, coach and develop a legal team;
·  Understand the strategy and complexity of the business and product portfolio to enable commercially effective advice.
Essential Education

Education (degree or equivalent) and professional qualification as an Attorney/Lawyer (most likely licensed to practise in the UK or another European jurisdiction) is required.

Desired profile

Essential experience and job requirements

·  Proven track record as a Solicitor/Advocate with a commercial law/IP background and preferably with in-house experience.
·  Experience advising on marketing matters and drafting and negotiating commercial agreement
·  The ability to manage multiple conflicting demands across a diverse business portfolio.
·  Excellent interpersonal, communication and analytical skills in both written and spoken English.
·  Possess the highest professional and ethical standards.
