Role synopsis

The biological sciences are strategically important, growing in capability, and possibly disruptive to BP's business model. We have established a Bioscience Center to maintain critical mass in biosciences capability, perfect current opportunities and assess future opportunities across the range of BP's businesses. The Center will stay closely connected to BP businesses and external technologies to ensure the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development and to advise businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The Center will operate similar to a start-up company, requiring a team made up of flexible, multi-skilled, innovative members that can work collaboratively across the research portfolio.

The Bioscience Center Analytical Scientist will report to Reinhard Dirmeier.

As the Analytical Chemist for the BSC Science team, the individual will provide analysis of large and small molecule samples generated in the Centre using a range of state of the art analytical instrumentation and software to provide information on compounds present and quantities of these, optimization of existing and development of new fit-for-purpose analytical methods for identification and/or quantification of unknown compounds, and delivery of high quality and accurate analytical chemistry data. The Analytical chemist will also serve as an expert on analytical instrumentation and methods across projects, train BSC colleagues on methods, hardware and data processing, supervise review of analytical results generated by BSC scientists, and certify experimental conclusions. The Analytical chemist will also write analytical procedures and validate as needed. The Analytical Chemist will also interface with 3rd party analytical service providers and coordinate delivery of sample results back to the Centre.

The individual will join a group of interactive scientists both within the BSC and within the greater BP. Strong communication skills are a must. The successful candidate will have demonstrated outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and scientific analytical skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. This position requires hands on work at the bench in the Center laboratories and/or at partner facilities.
