For our site in Derby, we are currently looking to recruit a Mechanical Systems Engineer working within Fleet Support to join a highly skilled engineering team.

Role

The Fleet Support Engineering Team is responsible for providing technical support for Bombardiers in-service fleets. As a Mechanical Systems Engineer you will be responsible for ensuring that Mechanical Systems Engineering solutions are delivered to pre-agreed timescales, within budget and quality standard.

You will be required to develop, validate and prepare modifications and maintenance changes for supported fleets (comprising DEMU, DMU, EMU METRO & LRV) under Bombardier’s Engineering Change process.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop mechanical engineering solutions and engineering change documentation, predominantly focused on Safety, Reliability, System Enhancement and Maintenance.

You are specifically required to:

• Investigate Reliability, Safety and Maintenance issues.

• Provide technical leadership in the design, development, testing and validation of modifications under the Engineering Change process.

• Deliver engineering solutions that result in LCC reductions and TCO solutions for the benefit of the business. This will typically involve the development of maintenance optimization or maintenance extension solutions.

• Interface with BT’s depot teams to identify and deliver technical solutions.

• Interface with BT’s offshore engineering team and other 3rd party agencies to identify and manage the delivery of work packages to agreed timescales, within budget & to an acceptable quality standard.

• Provide cost and schedule estimates on engineering programs.

Key Responsibilities and Challenges:

• Participates on a systems engineering team. Estimates costs and schedules. Organizes and structures personal workload to achieve consistent on time delivery against the Engineering Plan.

• Understands customer requirements, gathers and analyzes technical data to develop and document high quality, safe, reliable and cost effective vehicle modification or maintenance optimization solutions under the Engineering change process. Displays a competency in several Mechanical Systems.

• Carries out high integrity validation of vehicle modifications undertaken against industry standards. Identifies and thoroughly reviews and closes out all credible risks, develops and participates in system test procedures or other validation approaches as appropriate. Participates in design reviews internally and with customers.

• Provides technical expertise in support of Customer Service, Manufacturing, Operations and Maintenance Manual production.

• Provides Technical Support to depot based engineering teams, assisting projects to overcome in service issues in a timely and professional manner.

• Competency to Independent Practitioner level in at least one Mechanical system and Supervised Practitioner in multiple Mechanical Systems.

Desired profile

Qualifications

• Master Degree and/or Chartered status, with significant previous experience.

• Technical domain experience essential, System Integration experience desirable, System Architectural understanding desirable.

• Experience or sound understanding of defining, structuring and developing a rolling stock concept and design.

• Experience and hands on delivery of the design, analysis, development, testing and delivery of engineering solutions that solve complex requirements.

• Provide cost and schedule estimates on complicated engineering programs.

• Provide technical expertise in vehicle level concept development.

• Be able to demonstrate the ability to use this technical knowledge in the support of other departments (engineering, production, procurement, projects) and the development of less experienced engineering personnel.

• Experience of developing and applying a range of system engineering process and tools.

• Experience of working across many different disciplines, with indirect reports to delivery complaint cost effective solutions technical solutions to schedule and budget.

• Experience of converting the customer's explicit and implicit technical and functional requirements into technical/ functional specifications to be used by design teams.
