  Synthesis Lab Technician, SGO – 2000517 – Charlotte, NC

 
Where the Chemistry Happens…
  We are seeking a Synthesis Lab Technician (SGO), to work in the Dispersions & Pigments (ED) business unit as part of our Charlotte, NC site. 

Role supports the R&D activities for the growth of the EDN business and supports the Polylab operations including the daily deliverables and elements of safety and cost management. Additionally, the role has a highly technical function in the process development group supporting the manufacturing efforts of a highly complex technology.

Formula for Success

·  Leveraging your education background in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field, you will synthesize and characterize polymers to support the existing and develop new printing and packaging, adhesive and industrial coatings products & portfolio. Leveraging your educational bachelor’s degree in science (preferably Chemistry or Chemical Engineering) or a High School diploma and 5 years relevant experience is required.  Experience with polymer synthesis, processing and testing equipment.
·  Must have the highest standards of integrity, accuracy and attention to detail. Must be highly organized, flexible and capable of adapting to priority changes daily.  Qualified individual will be capable of light physical activity, full days of desk work and combinations of both.
·  Must be capable of working in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures yet flexible enough to work in an environment of scientific experimentation. Basic understanding of process equipment design including pumps, polymerization reactors, pressure relief valve sizing, material balances, instrument specifications, and heat exchangers. Knowledge of automation systems (PLC, DCS) a large plus.  Effectively communicate using oral & written skills with scientists, peers, and management to ensure that information is exchanged at all levels.
·  Responsible for the safe operation of high temperature continuous polymerization reactor per standard protocols under the supervision of senior scientist for the development of new products and production support of EDN manufacturing operations
·  Responsible for coordinating lab work load, including safety and EHS activities, raw material & waste handling, prioritization of work request by interfacing with scientists. This includes maintaining an open process safety culture, Zero Incident Mindset, provide and complete safety training.  Your strong commitment to workplace safety is a plus as you will maintain a well-stocked, clean and safe laboratory environment.
·  Responsible for documenting results with a high attention to detail, while summarizing and reporting observations to the supervising chemist.  Responsible for independent project work or operate reactors to help troubleshoot pilot plant issues.  Your solid skills in interpreting data and documenting results will be essential as you will prepare emulsions, summarize data, and report observations to the supervising chemist.
·  Your ability to display the highest standards of job safety, integrity, accuracy, reproducibility, and attention to detail will be of high importance as you commission, calibrate, and operate laboratory equipment, as well as coordinate and ship samples to technical marketing and customers.
