Development Technician (Printing & Packaging and Industrial Coatings) – 2000516 – Charlotte, NC

We are seeking a Development Technician (Printing & Packaging and Industrial Coatings), to work in the Dispersions & Resins (ED) R&Dunit as part of our Charlotte, NC site. 

This role services the research needs of a business unit and scientists which are business critical to the growth of the EDN. Collaborative interaction with the EDN’s technical service group is expected.

Role supports the R&D activities for the growth of the EDN business and supports the development and application activities including the daily deliverables and elements of safety and cost management. 

Development Technician is a member of a team of technicians who are coordinated by a R&D scientist. Individual has no administrative responsibility.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Formula for Success

·  Leveraging your educational background in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field, you will formulate and characterize emulsion polymers to support the existing waterborne polymer product portfolio, as well as formulate emulsion polymers for new product development in waterborne coatings and inks for printing and packaging, industrial, transportation, furniture and floorcare coatings. 
·  Your strong commitment to workplace safety is a plus as you will maintain a well-stocked, clean, and safe laboratory environment.  Additional commitment to work in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures yet flexible enough to work in an environment of scientific experimentation.
·  Your solid skills in interpreting data and documenting results will be essential as you will evaluate adhesives, summarize data, and report observations to the supervising chemist.  Responsible for documenting results with a high attention to detail, while summarizing and reporting observations to the supervising chemist.
·  Your ability to display the highest standards of job safety, integrity, accuracy, reproducibility, and attention to detail will be of high importance as you commission, calibrate, and operate laboratory equipment, as well as coordinate and ship samples to technical marketing and customers.  Responsible for the safe and reproducible operation of characterization and testing equipment per standard protocols under the supervision of senior scientist for the development of new products in support of EDN operations.
·  Utilizing your capability of working in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures yet flexible enough to work in an environment of scientific experimentation. Basic understanding of data collection and analysis.  Experience with design of experiments and statistical analysis software like JMP, a large plus.
·  Responsible for carrying out work load, including safety and EHS activities, raw material & waste handling, and work requests by interfacing with supervising scientist. This includes maintaining an open process safety culture, zero incident mindset and provide and complete safety training.  Additional responsibility for maintaining basic lab stock of raw materials, supplies, and spare parts, and maintenance equipment including routine calibration.
