Chemist II– 2000622 –Charlotte, NC
Where the Chemistry Happens…

  We are seeking a Chemist II to work in the Dispersions & Pigments (ED) business unit as part of our Charlotte, NC site. 

  The Technical Application Laboratory Chemist will complete hands-on application work on technical service projects for existing products and new products entering the commercialization phase to support growth with our customers. Communication and adaptability are crucial skills for this position as the role will plan, coordinate, and execute lab work with Application Laboratory Technicians, document results, collaborate with Technical Specialists, and manage assigned equipment and SOPs/JSAs. This position is part of the Construction Solutions Application Laboratory team reporting directly to the Technical Team Leader.

Formula for Success

·  Utilizing experience in water-based emulsions, ideally with adhesives applications, this role will conduct technical evaluations of BASF products vs. competitive products in industry-specific application tests. Candidate will evaluate data and document results to drive business decisions.
·  Completes technical application development and testing of products for customer troubleshooting and targeted development utilizing the entire BASF portfolio of products.
·  Works with cross-functional team (sales, marketing, R&D, and operations) to develop water-based starting point formulations for new/existing product portfolio.
·  Critical thinking is mandatory as this role is responsible for method evaluations, development and troubleshooting.
·  Manages customer expectations (production & end-customer) through technical testing, analysis, and industry expertise.
·  Guides R&D development for specific industry application testing to drive the development of products with strong business cases.  Performs critical primary analysis of results, data of new product evaluation, formulation support and recommendation of next steps especially for products entering commercialization phase.
·  Operates in compliance with EH&S and ISO quality standards.
·  Maintains laboratory and laboratory equipment in compliance with 6S and ISO and contributes knowledge of test methods and writing respective SOP/JSA.
·  Communicates exceptionally, both written and oral, across functional areas (R&D, marketing, sales, operations)
·  Driven by a strong customer focus and strongly capable of cross-functional relationship building internally and externally.
·  Strong laboratory skills and ability to prioritize work on multiple tasks and projects as well as directing others in a fast-paced environment
·  Ability to design and direct laboratory experiments, interpret results and design follow-up experiments
·  Develops and maintains knowledge in formulation and application of water-based binders and related technology
·  Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation of results (both written and oral)
·  Work effectively in a team environment and also on individual efforts and be able to work well under minimum supervision as well as directing others (technicians)

·  Be able to lift up to 50 lbs
·  Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or material science (or similar field) + 2 years’ industrial experience, or Master's degree +0 years’ industrial experience 
·  Minimum of 2 years’ experience formulation and application of water-based binders and related technology (graduate level work would count toward 2 year requirement)
