Job description

Systems / Safety Engineer

Are you looking to apply your Safety Engineering knowledge to the design of cutting edge systems for the UK’s existing and future submarine fleet? BAE Systems is looking for System/ Safety Engineers to join the Combat Systems Team based in Weymouth, Filton, Frimley or Plymouth.

The Combat System encompasses the submarine's ‘fight capability’. This includes its ability to carry out all of the below whilst remaining undetected by other parties:

Detect targets above and below the water

Circumnavigate the globe underwater

Intercept and send communications

Load and fire weapons and countermeasures

Joining the Combat Systems team will give you a unique and exciting opportunity to apply your knowledge and experience to a range of complex systems and platforms. You could be working on existing submarines such as the in-service Astute class, new classes currently in the design stage, and even future programmes which are looking at concept designs for submarines that won’t be in service for generations.

As a Systems / Safety Engineer you will be carrying out a range of Safety Engineering activities and analyses on all areas of the combat system involved. This work will contribute to the development and maintenance of the, submarine-level, Def Stan 00-56 safety case, to demonstrate that the safety risks of operating the submarine are as low as reasonably possible.

For the right candidate, training can be offered in some areas to support career development and achievement of Chartered Engineer status as recognised by The Engineering Council.

As a Systems / Safety Engineer you will be involved with:

Developing functional safety justifications for defence systems based on claims, argument and evidence

Organising and contributing to Hazard Identification workshops and Safety Committee meetings

Carrying out and analysing results of studies such as Failure Mode & Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, to gather evidence to support the safety case

Production and maintenance of Safety Case documentation (plans, policies and reports) to support project milestones

Your skills and qualifications as a Systems / Safety Engineer:

To be successful in this post you will ideally have a blend of Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering and CS domain knowledge.

From a System Engineering perspective, you should have an understanding of system development lifecycle against the standard 'V-model' from Requirement Definition to Customer Acceptance.

It would be beneficial, but not essential, for you to have some knowledge or experience in one or more of the sub-systems that provide the ‘fight’ capability. Combat System sub-systems include Above Water Surveillance, Command & Control, Common Infrastructure, External Communications, Navigation and Underwater Surveillance.

As a Systems / Safety Engineer you will be expected to hold as a minimum, the following qualifications and competencies:

A formal nationally recognised, qualification in an Engineering or Science discipline.

An understanding of: Hazard Logs, Hazard Identification, Safety Cases, Fault Tree Analysis

Experience of working to MoD standards such as Def Stan 00-56, DSA 01-02, JSP520, JSP418, POSMS

What we're looking for in you:

We are looking for you to be hardworking, self-motivated and driven, with the ability to prioritise your workload appropriately. You will be adaptable, as you will be exposed to a wide variety of engineering problems often troubleshooting to meet project deadlines.

Location:

Weymouth (Preferred)

For the right candidate, we may also consider our other Southern sites:

Bristol (Filton), Frimley, Plymouth.

Salary: Competitive

Benefits: Our employees receive an excellent benefits package which includes a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. We also offer a range of additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, childcare vouchers, Cycle2work and many local and national employee discounts.
