Principal Engineer – Software Engineering Subject Matter Expert

Would you like an opportunity to work with military based software, tackling some of the greatest software complexities and associated risk levels? We currently have a vacancy for a Software Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) at our site in Frimley.

As a Software Engineering SME, you will be responsible for providing governance, guidance and support for all aspects of software development for submarine combat systems. You will be applying your software expertise to support a complex engineering programme.

This role will enable you to steer the direction of software specification, design and implementation and associated technical integrity of the outputs, in a software-intensive, interesting and exciting business area.

Your main responsibilities as the Software Engineering SME will involve:

Providing the Technical Authorities with specialist advice for software, including specification of requirements, development methods, safety justification and operating procedures and software configuration management requirements

Overseeing and facilitating technical integrity throughout the software requirements lifecycle by liaising with software suppliers and systems suppliers to maintain assurance of design intent – compiling evidence in support of software certification, qualification and safety justification activities

Supporting the combat system subsystem TAs on verification activities through inspection and conducting audits on software outputs, harnessing experience of writing software to foresee technical challenges through life and proposing best approach

Imparting expertise to the supply chain on how to develop software in accordance with the combat system software development plan

Reviewing suppliers' software requirement acceptance evidence and software management and design artefacts

Supporting software development and system trials, and contributing to the identification and rapid closure of defects and issues

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential
· Degree (Honours) qualified in STEM discipline or equivalent experience in a related discipline
· Detailed knowledge of mission critical software development in a modern software engineering environment from requirements through design, implementation, testing and acceptance
· Experience of establishing software programmes of work and requirements suitable for sub-contracting
· Experience of audit, review and inspection of third party software development
· Understanding of current international software standards and safety standards, such as Def Stan 0056 or IEC61508

Desirable
· Experience of development of safety critical (SIL 3) systems including achievement of an appropriate level of software safety integrity
· Experience of current Ministry of Defence software standards

Maritime Submarines – Combat Systems

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. It currently employs approximately 7,700 people, with 500 of these working for Combat Systems across our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Ash Vale, Broad Oak, Filton, Frimley and Weymouth.

We are currently responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of the Royal Navy's latest and most capable generation of attack submarines, as well as their intelligent Combat Systems trusted to detect threats in the naval environment.

Our Combat Systems team designs, builds, integrates and supports all of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet – essentially, the eyes and ears of each platform. We provide through-life support for combat systems, sensors and radars, and deliver complex programmes and technologies by applying expert programme management and world-class engineering.
