Product Safety Engineer

Would you like to play a key role in supporting the safety of in-service submarines? We currently have a vacancy for a Product Safety Engineer at our site in Filton, within the Submarine Design Services (SDS) team. (Other sites will be considered, including Frimley, Weymouth, or Portsmouth)

As a Product Safety Engineer, you will be working within a team responsible for the ‘platform' safety elements for in-service submarines, including both electrical and mechanical aspects. You will be responding to and solving real-time engineering issues, as well as working on long-term safety related projects.

You will be responsible for working closely with multiple stakeholders within the submarine enterprise with full visibility across the complete submarine lifecycle. This is a live, in-service role, responding to real time engineering issues, where you will see the result of your endeavours.

Your main responsibilities as a Product Safety Engineer will involve:

The maintenance of through-life in-service submarine safety cases

Providing support to the production of Maintenance Period Clearance for Use Assessments

Monitoring, assessing and responding directly to safety-related requests and queries from the MoD customer

Making initial judgements on potential safety implications of events and material state changes that have occurred on in-service submarines and provide authoritative advice to the MoD

Carrying out safety assessments for in-service design changes, supporting hazard reviews and hazard log upkeep, whilst advising on key hazard certification

Interfacing with the Safety and Engineering expertise across BAE Systems and with other key stakeholders (both industrial partners and MoD customer)

Providing progress and awareness briefings to the duty holder (UK MoD) representatives

Providing Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) support to safety committees, working groups and assessment Groups

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Demonstrable experience within Product Safety OR an Engineer with demonstrable submarine domain knowledge and experience (e.g. Royal Navy Operator/ Maintainer)

Desirable:

Previous experience working within the maritime/ submarine/ MoD environment and the safety methodology within those industries

SSMO qualified

Experience of hazard identification, risk analysis and safety case management

You must have excellent interpersonal skills, alongside resilience and confidence when articulating technical information or advice to the customer. You must also have the ability to use your initiative to resolve engineering issues.

Location: Filton or Abbey Wood ideally, however we would consider other sites: Frimley, Weymouth, or Portsmouth
