Principal Systems Engineer – Computing Infrastructure

Would you like to work with cutting-edge technology to develop combat systems for submarines? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Systems Engineer – Computing Infrastructure to be based at our site in Weymouth, Dorset or Frimley, Surrey.

As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will be involved in the architectural and system level design of the IT, networking and operating systems infrastructure on which combat systems for all UK submarines are built. You will be assisting with implementation and delivery of the infrastructure onto specific boat types and working with the Infrastructure Design Authority, Product Leaders, and directly with the customer.

This role will enable you to work with state-of-the-art technology, supporting nationally important submarine programmes.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer (Epoch 3) will involve:

Responding to UK submarine combat system requirements (functional and non-functional), concepts of use, architectural constraints and physical constraints

Carrying out architectural and system level design through to test and acceptance

Undertaking architectural design studies for new technology concepts and assessment of commercial technology opportunities via prototyping and de-risking

Determining and managing requirements

Decomposing and allocating requirements to functional and system breakdown structures

Defining system test and acceptance strategies for functional and non-functional qualification

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer (Epoch 3):

Essential:

· Systems engineering experience
· Background in networks, processing systems, operating systems and/or virtualisation
· Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)

Desirable:

· Defence industry background
· Degree or equivalent in Systems Engineering

Maritime Submarines – Combat Systems

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. It currently employs approximately 7,700 people, with 500 of these working for Combat Systems across our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Ash Vale, Broad Oak, Filton, Frimley and Weymouth.

We are currently responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of the Royal Navy's latest and most capable generation of attack submarines, as well as their intelligent Combat Systems trusted to detect threats in the naval environment.

Our Combat Systems team designs, builds, integrates and supports all of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet – essentially, the eyes and ears of each platform. We provide through-life support for combat systems, sensors and radars, and deliver complex programmes and technologies by applying expert programme management and world-class engineering.
